Bryan Oviedo

Sometimes people come through these spells of injuries! I remember Kendall getting crucified for signing Andy Gray and Peter Reid because of their injury records and they turned out half decent ;)
I remember saying at the time of his break it would take longer than everyone was saying. I had the same break - took me 18 months to get right - some say I've never got back to my best.
He's a great player. Always settles the team when he's playing.

The length of contract is surprising for a player who has played so little. I suppose it's possibly that long in the hope of recouping a decent fee in a year or two if things don't work out. Definitely worth an extension but 3 and a 1/2 years is probably a tad excessive. Waiting until the end of the season and reassessing would've been a decent move.

53 appearance since signing. For comparison, everyone's favourite sicknote Gibson who was signed 6 months earlier has 64. Gibson has also been in the match day squad more (18 vs. 15) and available for selection in general far more this season (27 vs. 19). Oviedo however has been used a lot when he has been available so is obviously in Martinez plans.

Martinez tenure has seen a few strange contract extensions. McAleny 3-year extension when nearly 22 and nowhere near the first-team. Kone automatic extension after 35 appearances. Besic likewise triggering one after 25 appearances. I would expect salaries to increase after hitting appearance milestones, but triggering extensions after such low appearances during 3-5 year contracts. Bizarre.

Ace, he's a really good full back and if it wasn't for injuries and the fact he's been understudy to Baines, then he'd have played a lot more games. Hopefully he can put those injuries behind him and we'll have real competition for that left back position. I'm not sure where that leaves Garbutt, but we've got both Oviedo and Garbutt on decent length contracts, so the club's in a strong position here.

It was nice to see @GrandOldTeam trying to stir up a bit of contoversy in a @davek kind of way. The way the forum pretty much just got on with feeling good about Bryan's contract must tell us something though. Well in forum.

I wouldn't mind seeing McAleny get a shot though. Been good seeing him improve since he got a run out against Arsenal years ago.

Eh?

:hayee:

Great news. Top man, likeable player and decent. Good to tie him down to 3 years and here's hoping he gets a long run with a clean bill of health from here on in.

A Bryan thunderbolt is long overdue so I'm calling it now that he will score a beauty tomorrow ;)

I wouldn't have minded either, looked decent in the few fleeting glances that I saw him. The point is that he almost certainly won't. That ship has sailed and at this stage he would be doing well to get himself a permanent move to championship level. Maybe Wigan will take him on a permanent if he continues to do well and they get promoted.

Martinez seems to like players with the guts to fight back from long term injuries.Oviedo, Kone, and it also occurs to me that Roberto may have noticed a decline in Baines, and he will begin to be phased out if he hasn't already.

If he stays fit and injury free the LB spot could be his even beyond the 3 1/2 year deal. At 25 he still has potentially 5/6 years before signs of any physical drop offs that FBs suffer.

For me as before the injury he is far more suited for a martinez system than baines, baines would be considered the better player but like at leicester you go with the best for the system and Oviedo has never failed to impress when playing in his natural position and he just needs to get a run of games under him now to get up to speed again.

I have been very impressed by how he isn't afraid to put a leg in to a tackle like many who have had such a horrific injury tend to be afterwards, so far any 50/50 he has gone for without thought of re-injury which is a massive boost for the confidence to know that its not mentally an issue.

I also like the partnership between him and Cleverley (the wide attacking role is his best position in a martinez team imo), it will never be as beautifully intricate as the baines and pienaar link up but it has far more potential to be solid defensively and they compliment each others styles well when attacking.
