With Germany celebrating VE day for the first time and declaring a national holiday in Berlin, to celebrate the liberation of the German state from Nazi tyranny, I've been wondering myself if the UK should hold a public holiday to celebrate the fall of the British Empire. It could be an opportunity to celebrate the liberation of the likes of India (and others of course) from British oppression, to celebrate the diversity in British society today. Maybe it would help to soften the stance of gammons who want to bring the empire back, help them realise that will never happen and stem the tide of anger rippling through British politics and society today.
