Suffice to say with it being 2014 next year there will be a lot of attention given to the WW1 centenary, and no doubt the football match played on Christmas day between the two sides.

Wonder if the FA will do something nice and make the annual boxing day fixtures derby matches whenever possible?

Would we call a temporary truce to rivalry with the other lot if such a thing happened?

Great Idea; great sentiment and a cracking plan, inovative, blue sky thinking, should be put into operation rightaway

No chance with the Prem / FA then

We used to play Utd occasionaly on boxing day. I remember losing 2-6 in the late seventies when we hadn't lost for about 20 games, ruined my xmas. If we lost to FC Norway on boxing day I'd be suicidal.

It would be brilliant that. Wont happen though. Feckin Sky/BT wouldnt want it. Too many ace games at once I guess.

Yeah, this would rule it out. Shame really. Imagine this fixture list.

Liverpool v Everton
Man United v Man City
Tottenham v Arsenal
Chelsea v West Ham
Swansea v Cardiff
Aston Villa v WBA
Newcastle v Sunderland
Fulham v Palace
Hull City v Stoke
Southampton v Norwich

Obviously the last two aren't derbies like, but that would make a boss day of football.

That would be fantastic, although obviously they'd come to Goodison :)

...traditionally Boxing Day matches were always relatively local affairs to cut down on travel but since the advent of Premier League that seems to have been forgotten.

Derby games on Boxing day wont happen. One reason why is the financial side of it, the clubs would lose a lot of money each year. Boxing day sells out, Derby sells out = 2 sold out games, if we played Sunderland a few weeks ago there would be a few thousand empty seats so down on ticket sales. Don't forgot the prem is all about money.

Another reason is which team gets the home tie? along with Sky missing a chance to show a top game its a none starter.

A shorter travel distance might be better, such as Sunderland going to Old Trafford and Stoke coming to Gooidson...etc

I remember that game as well.Macari scored with an overhead kick and Manure only had about 7 or 8 attacts
thsat day.Ruined My Xmas also.

My favourite boxing day game was 3-4 against the mancs. They went 3-0 up at half time, with Saha scoring a clearly offside goal (until we saw it on MOTD later), then Rooney came on at half time and he terrorised Silvestre and Naismith, Weir and one other scored for us. As we pushed for the winner, they broke down the other end and Van Nistelroy killed the game.

I was convinced Ferguson was going to score the winner though.

A lot of rugby clubs hold traditional derbies on Boxing Day & Easter Monday. Rangers always used to play Celtic at Ibrox on New Years' Day. It'd be a great idea if we could have our games against the RS "fixed" for specific dates but make sure that the dates are alternated each year. This nonsense about playing the RS at GP first, seemingly every year, has got to stop.

As for a temporary truce, never, ever, ever.
