Blue Bill

A lesser man would not have pleaded and would have just stripped us of all our assets to ensure he got away cleanly.

There is evidence of this all throughout the world of football, even in our own land you have the likes of Leeds, Blackburn, Aston Villa, Portsmouth etc etc, and yet here are some of us crying like little kids because we didn't sign Messi or whatever.

A capable man would not have allowed the Club to get into such a mess. Expecting us to like him for not asset stripping us is like thanking a driver for not ploughing into you at a zebra crossing.

And who were/are these people crying "because we didn't sign Messi or whatever"? I've never heard any blue say we should have gone for Messi though I do remember plenty who were concerned and annoyed when we spent barely anything at all for 3 years from 2009.

Almost as sickening as people having a go at the bloke because he didn't mortgage our future on a bunch of random players whilst ignoring all the other good things that have come out of the club under his watch (EITC, Former Players Foundation, keeping match tickets reasonably priced etc etc).

As daft as it sounds there is more to a football club than just the football. It is something people lose sight of.

He quite literally mortgaged all our future income, there was nothing left to borrow against.

Everton Place......oops it's not our land. Quick, blame it on IT problems......

Absolutely shambolic. As far removed from NSNO as it is possible to be.

I think the Messi thing is an intentional exaggeration mate.

However you're right that we were all frustrated at the lack of signings for one particular extended period.

While not excusing that (as I feel 2005 was the biggest missed opportunity, signing only Phil Neville), perhaps his work would've been easier had Peter Johnson not crippled the club prior to leaving.

Someone at some point had to tidy up.

In the early years "he got rid of Peter Johnson" was often said.

True enough, however this can only get you so far. As years went on, our expectations rose and he (which he freely admitted) couldn't keep up pace with other PL club owners.

Overall I think he did ok, but a lot of credit for that has to go to David Moyes for working wonders with next to no money.

Agree with you about Moyes, I think that largely helped paper over the cracks

These threads always descend into the same things being repeated over & over.

The true measure of how great an evertonian he is will be what he decides to do with the £50m he's made out of our club.

Hmmm, he had more money than some people make out. People always seem to forget that players want to be paid a wage when playing for us. Generally we were always able to offer improved terms to our existing players.

But yeah he deffo did a job for us until he got stale.

First of all...what £50M?

Secondly, it has got nothing to do with you what he does with it anyway.

There are average match going evertonians taking time off work and walking/cycling all over the country to raise money for Everton charities yet somebody who will make roughly £50m out of Everton is described as that above.

Sickening
I would never doubt the passion of Evertonians, and I don't know where the figure £50m comes from. But when Kenwright took over Everton from Johnson no one else wanted to know and if it had gone pear shaped and we had done a Coventry or Leeds no one would have covered his costs.
Also have you ever heard any one Joey that actually know him slag him off? Everyone showers praise on him as a man. Liverpool have no one like him.

Yeah I know re Messi but if he's gonna name him

I think personally 2009 was the turning point. We never learned from 2005 and allowed people to leave rather than kick on and from then Moyes and Bill were locked into a circle of self perpetuation. No pressure to win silver, a top 10 (in the world!) manager salary, no questions asked by mgmt of the board and a media profile that had plummeted.

History won't judge that period well at all.

We have been in a mess since the early 90's for gods sake! Do we not remember the club shop looking like an Eastern Bloc supermarket and home crowds in the low teens?

Yes it was annoying that we did no sign anyone (we did like... but nobody major) but there was obviously a reason for that. We were stable enough in the league at the time so I would assume it was a calculated risk to ensure that we were never in serious danger of going bust again.

One of life's little pleasures is spending other people's money.
We could have done more by asking for ticket prices to rise to a similar amount as the so called top clubs in the league. Arsenal make millions and millions more than us out of their ST holders. Why didn't we have the bottle to put ours up and go for it?

I would say also that we suffered from top level executive mismanagement from 1988 - 2017.
