2024/25 Beto

Having a Beto in the squad also raises the bar for whoever comes in to replace Dom/Broja. The bar has been set very low over recent seasons, so now its been raised. Whoever comes in, be it a permanent signing or loan, they need to be hitting double figures because if they don't, Beto will! Moyesy has been vocal about raising standards, and keeping a goal scoring striker at the club is another step towards that.

….its a moot point whether the bar has been raised, a few weeks ago Beto’s inability to look after the ball cost us a goal at Chelsea. He’s very hit and miss, there’s no doubt DCL is more polished and the superior footballer, but there is certainly an argument that Beto is more effective.

In a few weeks I’ve gone from thinking Moyes is very keen on a DCL renewal to thinking he’s happy keeping Beto.

Hopefully not inviting trouble, but a big plus with Beto is his robustness and availability. His goal scoring record also suggests he’s more effective than our other options. I dare say I’ll change my mind again next week but it’s guesswork as to what Moyes wants/thinks.

No need to panic about another striker, remember we still have the option of extending Neal Maupays' contract by one year, if memory serves.
I like the rumours that he'll be bought by Marseilles, under the terms of the loan, then sold to a Championship club. He said he'd see us in The Championship but if it turns out he sees us from there 🤣

It just frustrates me. Like when people say we never replaced Lukaku because we never got a 20 goal striker. Well, we never had a striker in the PL who was a 20 goal a season striker before him (barring one off seasons) and we had him for what, 4 years? In none of those years did we finish top 4.

I bet if you look at the stats, the vast majority of those 2.9 strikers a season are in top 4 teams each season. We aren’t and haven’t been barring one season. Thats our aspiration, but a 20 goal a season striker isn’t going to join us until we are on the verge of that really. Or we develop one into that.

It’s why I don’t mind strikers who only score 10-12, depending on what the contribution is away from that. For example, Delap who people are clamouring for, has a goal/assist (12/2) in 11 games this season. What’s he done in the other 25 games to show his value and worth? I don’t know as I don’t watch them regularly but the games I’ve seen he has done very little. Obviously the caveat is he plays for Ipswich and is young so likely to improve which is why for me he would be a decent signing.

But this is why having a player like Beto who we know can get goals and take the pressure off is vital.
Lukaku got slaughtered by the usual biffs despite his goals, we've got lads going after Brainthwaite and Ndaiye (especially if it means protecting the players they like), I think we just have to accept the more opinions available the more crap ones you are going to see. Sadly it seems to be the crap one that insist on being seen again and again.

Lukaku was an easy target,I remember the posts about taking his goals away we would still have the same wins as the third goal in a 3-1 win was meaningless. It totally ignored the state of the game at the time. 2-1 up but the opposition were pressing for an equaliser and Lukaku's goal made it safe. If Beto gets a brace on Sunday in a 3-0 win the usual suspects will be there with the " it's a dead rubber against a relegated side and we would have won anyway" posts.

you’re blinkered how many assists does he have, what else does he do for the team and don’t say he doesn’t need to if he’s scoring, that’s fine if he’s getting 30 goals
But he’s not. You need to be a lot better all round striker if you want to be successful as a team
I’d say, aside from goals, we really miss his press when he’s not in the side.

His workrate is second to none, cbs know they have been in a game with Beto.

It’s noticeable when he’s not playing.

I agree there’s things he can work on, such as 1st touch, but get him half decent service and he will score goals - what more do you want from a cf?

You need a lot more in the modern game
The old “press” buzz word, let’s just keep him and doucoure then as apparently they press. If he’s number 9 next season then fair enough, I can’t see it personally. He may get 15 goals, but he may cost us a few IE Chelsea. He’s was poor first half on Saturday and that doesn’t help the team, as your number 9 is your focal point, especially away from home

There’s not a chance he gets 20
Goals, he’s has 11 in 58, ok only 22 starts, but has been a sub 36 times. And scored some of
Tkem off the bench, you can use what stats suit your agenda, games since Moyes, etc
He’s also has no assists and created only 4 chances. He’s missed 18 big chances, so misses more than he scores. Not sure that’s going to change at 27/28. He shouldn’t be our starting number 9 next season
He's be ok this season, and we create very little. If you haven't noticed we are a bit crap, and no 20 goal striker is even going to consider us. People wanting Delap but last time I checked Beto's goals per minute this season is better. I think if we can get better attacking players in forward roles that can contribute more to the goals and not leave it all on the striker.

This is the thing though, people on here are suggesting Beto could get close 20 next year, when’s he’s never been close to that, 21 in 2 seasons in Italy for a mid table side. So we could get Delap and he could go from 12 to 20 with us, same argument stands, better team and better players around him, same goes for us signing a player from the French league who scored 14 say, we don’t know what they will do. If Beto can potentially double his best season, then so can Loads of other players.

I’m not saying let’s go and get Delap, but I think he is a better player than Beto and you’d back a 22 yr old to improve over a 27 yr old

Personally I think pressing is one of the biggest weaknesses in his game. He runs around a lot, but I don't think he's an effective presser in terms of timing or angles, he's pretty easily played around.

Labrador pressing isn’t it. Effective sometimes because he’s massive and rapid. He isn’t clever though and doesn’t close off passing lanes very well.
