2020/21 Ben Godfrey

I thought he was very good yesterday. Its funny as I watched that Fofana yesterday and he really struggled against Mane, whereas I thought Godfrey dealt with him well. Likewise, I thought he kept Lookman quiet yesterday.

The penalty is the big ommission from yesterdays game. It was a rash tackle, but the sort of tackle you make when you are under the cosh for a prolonged period and you panic as a defender, rather just keep doing the basics. It'sa blot on the copy book, but yesterday our defenders were heavily under the cosh for large periods of that game.

I quite like him, and I quite like him in a 3 as well. I want to get behind Mina, but I do wonder if Keane flanked by Holgate/Godfrey may be the way to go for us.
I thought the tackle was really unlucky, the timing for his foot to land on the opponents foot, like Digne against Southampton, and Keans last year against Brighton, happens in a fraction of a second at a game moving 100mph. I don't think think it was late or clumsy, he didn't clatter him or cynically take his legs after he got caught out. It was, as they say, a coming together.

That's not to say it wasn't a pen, it was, but it was a nice bit of skill by Loftus Cheek to step over and let it run through his legs, and it would catch out most people. I don't think there's a lot more Godfrey could've done differently.

Can't be bothered trawling back pages to see if people really are turning on him or if it's just the usual made up stuff when people say someone's being written off by the entire fanbase because one person was vaguely critical of them, but I would seriously have to question the mindset of anyone who is knocking him. He's been in and out and in different positions with different teammates in his first few games, and I think he's looked alright in the main. Don't think we'll see the best of him for another year or so though.

Not that Martin Keown is the Oracle or anything but i found myself in agreement with him yesterday when he said Godfrey needs to start believing he's an Everton player. One thing it has proved is right back position isn't for him and it's a specialist position.

He’s nowhere near 150 appearances by my maths. Apart from last season he’s appeared in the lower leagues and had played only 30 PL appearances before joining us , hardly surprising he looks raw at times at 22.
For me he falls into Brands criteria of “ young player signed for the future that we can develop” , but you don’t pay that amount of money without expecting him to be also capable of being a squad player for us and playing in the first team. We haven’t seen enough of him to know if he’s part of the solution to our defensive woes, but I’m hoping that Carlo can get the best out of him this season.
I was counting appearances in the championship. If you don't want to that's fine but it is a good enough standard of football to develop players imo.

Think we need to see Ben Godfrey play a few games for Everton in his preferred position in ordered to get a better picture of the player before we can really start to judge him.
Spot on Cels. In the meantime we can get a decent picture of the player by looking at the below.
