2020/21 Ben Godfrey

I thought he was very good yesterday. Its funny as I watched that Fofana yesterday and he really struggled against Mane, whereas I thought Godfrey dealt with him well. Likewise, I thought he kept Lookman quiet yesterday.

The penalty is the big ommission from yesterdays game. It was a rash tackle, but the sort of tackle you make when you are under the cosh for a prolonged period and you panic as a defender, rather just keep doing the basics. It'sa blot on the copy book, but yesterday our defenders were heavily under the cosh for large periods of that game.

I quite like him, and I quite like him in a 3 as well. I want to get behind Mina, but I do wonder if Keane flanked by Holgate/Godfrey may be the way to go for us.
Yeah, I don't think that either Keane or Mina are mobile enough to play wide in a three. Keane does his best to mitigate it by not stepping out and allowing himself to get turned, but then this leads to open spaces like the one that Lookman attacked for Fulham's second goal.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Godfrey. The fact that he's come in at a time when there are other glaring holes in the squad suggests that Brands saw him as a can't-miss, and Ancelotti seems to regard him as senior player (unlike, say, Branthwaite or Gordon).

He got the nod ahead of Holgate, so I'd agree Ancelotti seems to rate him

I think if we stick with a 3, holgate & Godfrey either side of Keane, would surely be the better system. As they both have pace and would be more comfortable getting dragged to the flanks.

also Keane central would be better for him and he can concentrate on the main centre forward for the opposition. And can track him and be aggressive knowing he has holgate & Godfrey Behind him

I think Braitwaite looks a good prospect with the added bonus of being left footed. In the future a back three of Godfrey/Holgate/Braithwaite could be a great prospect.

Perhaps worth a shout for the Carabo cup match coming up

Benefit of a back 3 it stops Keane doing any wide work and keeps him protected from being dragged all over the shop, he can play to his strengths then.

As long as the wide CB's have pace (BG and MH do). Problem comes when you have a bang average defender in Mina playing WCB.

Well, I mean Keane played the wide CB at the weekend?

Well, I didn't say he didn't.

I'm saying that the strength of a back three is that if you have a player like Keane who's strengths are purely central, and not being dragged here there and everywhere then he can flourish in the middle but the wide CB's need to have pace to cover and do that work. We actually have two defenders who have pace and could do those wider roles leaving Keane (or Mina) in the centre of the three to play their own game rather than being dragged wide. Holgate has flourished on the ball and is more than confident, as well as spells as a FB can do the cover work, Godfrey, while we don't know too much on him, has pace and again, has covered other positions so if he's out wide should have some experience of how to defend it.

Mina would have the same premise of being stronger in the middle, however for me Keane is a better actual defender and Mina is bang average at best. I know Keane's not perfect and his spell with us has been rocky, but under CA he has definately found his place and if you have others covering his weaknesses then he can focus on his strengths. He also appears to have found the confidence to pass a ball and has been very progerssive on the ball. His strong performances at Burnley came from him not having to go out wide as Dyche doesn't have his full backs bombing on. So if our system allowed that for Keane here too, (in a 352, 532/23) then great.

Yeh not saying it can't work just going off last weekend's game where Carlo felt Keane was more suited than Mina (somehow) out wide. We shall see at Leeds anyway.

I think it has been clear for a while that Keane and Mina together doesnt work - need a pacey or stronger player to cover them...in a back three or two it should be 1. Holgate or Godfrey 2. Keane or Mina ...and later in a few seasons t should be Holgate Godfrey together or Brandthwaite as well.

Has Keane played in the back 3 for England? Haven't watched that but I always feel like he's flanked by Kyle Walker and then also by Maguire or Dier.

I think Godfrey has done ok so far. I like a back 3 of Holgate, Godfrey and Keane. They can all probably bring the best out of each other.
