Beer, revisited

You rarely see Arkell's beers up here, this was delicious and not too strong.

As ever, Peerless comes up trumps, magnificent.

As an aside, I've just tasted some liqueurs I made in the autumn. Two sloe gins and a sloe and quince brandy - all maturing very nicely. People say it's drinkable after three months, but notably nicer after a year - we'll see.

Wouldn't mind seeing more brown ales rather than the ubiquitous stouts, which can be overtly sweet and sickly.

I`ve found Thwaites to be a real acquired taste, some of their stuff is top draw, yet other stuff is on par with the likes of Greene King ( imo )

It also seems to need to be well looked after and quite a few places get it wrong.

I really do like their Bomber Ale though.

Some Thwaites pubs are terrible, particularly the one that's five minutes away from me. On the other hand some aren't ; I love their bog standard bitter which keeps it's head down to the bottom of the glass.

Their flagship pub / hotel in Lancaster- the Toll House Inn ( on the corner as you drive in ) is simply stunning and the beer in there is just sublime, but as you say, a lot of their pubs seem to be in need of some real tlc and are quite dinghy - been to quite a few in Cumbria like that.
