Even with the players available for 09 final Moyes could have made it more competitive. Neville should have started at RB. Gosling should have been on the RW and Osman in CM. I still think we would have struggled but it would have given us more chance.
Or perhaps less of a chance?

Don't think there is much comparison, weren't we one of the richer clubs in Gordon Lee's days, then went to one of the very poorest in Moyes time at Everton. Moyes time at Everton also coincided with mega rich Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Liverpool throwing money around for fun.
We had Bill back of the sofa Kenwright pulling the purse strings. Moyes over Lee anytime for me.
Without doubt it was a different ball game

Total myth, by late 80s John Moores influence was on the wane, and the fact is, he never put an money into the club, he supported the finances with interest free loans and took his money out eventually
Lee never once broke our transfer record, he had to settle for George Wood as we didnt have the funds for Shilton.
The big spenders were Forest on Francis,
Man City on Daley
and even Wolves on Andy Gray.
I can recall on at least three occasions Moyes being allowed to break our transfer record.
Lee also was competing against the top sides in Europe too
During his tenure Forest won the European cup twice plus the other lot twice.
It was an achievement to finish 3rd behind them two European champions.

Breaking the transfer record three times, we were totally sell to buy though, I mean Fellaini was in all intents and purposes a swap deal for Rom. £27m for Fellaini and £28m for Rom.

That poor that he still managed the achievement of being the first manager of our club to be earning more than the players

Tbh I thought Moyes earned his money, but he probably stayed a couple of years too long. Moyes I think went two whole seasons without buying a first team player. People forget how cash strapped we really were in those days, dodgy overseas loans, sky money taken two years in advance.

If you could bear to watch, BBC replayed it recently, I had to have a few beers first
It was a nightmare wasn't it. Couldn't get tickets for the game. Me and me arl fella listening to it on the radio, dancing round the bedroom when Hamilton scored the winner. Can't even remember if we knew it had been disallowed till about a minute later. Blood still boils all these years later.

This narrrative isnt quite true.

We were not one of the poorest teams, we were nowhere near the "big" clubs but nobody was. We also spent more than most of the also rans on wages and trying to keep our players.

We finished above par more often than not which is good of course.

Lee had to work with some decidedly average and even poor players as well. Plus the fact he never liked McKenzie so I think he did quite well really although it was hard to see that at the time when that shower where cleaning up.

Controversial perhaps, but i'd have Ossie in first, with Johnson coming off the bench once Ferguson had battered the defence. Moyse side for me though.

Moyes made us good money in the transfer market. People go on about Harry Redknapp being a wheeler and dealer, but Moyes was actually good at it!

Interesting comparison between the the two era's.Saw almost all of the Lee tenure at home and many away games including the big heartbreak ones. That team was so unlucky(nothing new there). That semi final travesty killed us supporters. The RS thought it was hilarious that the goal was disallowed which made it worst.Moyes did well for us but better memories of Lee's nearly years.
