Barry on retirement, by GrandOldTeam

Gareth Barry isn’t considering retirement as he closes down on Ryan Giggs’ all-time Premier League appearance record.

Everton’s player of the season for 2015-16 told the Liverpool Echo: “You have got to know your own body and what your body needs.

“I count myself lucky that my body has been really good with injuries. I’ve only had a couple of setbacks throughout my career where I have been out for four or five weeks.

“You’ve got to keep that desire and make sure that you are driving into training every day wanting to give 100 per cent. You take it a day at a time – then suddenly you are looking back at 17 or 18 years.

“I’ve also seen players who have retired and they have all said to keep playing for as long as possible.

“For me, I want to keep going because there is plenty of time after football to relax. Whilst you can still play football, why not keep doing it?”

Couldn't imagine getting to the point, after playing in front of packed stadiums for a top team and for your country, and knowing you can't do it anymore.
Think that's why Gazza flipped with Hoddle in 98'

I always thought we got rid of him too soon. His replacement was a better player but Barry was still better than the likes of Fernando and Garcia. It can't have been easy doing all the defensive work in a two man midfield when your partner is Yaya. He was never the quickest player, but his reading of the game and his positioning was so good he didn't need to be. It was only when he had to cover for Yaya's defensive frailties that his lack of mobility became an issue. He's one of the most underrated players to grace the premier league and it's no surprise that the opinions of him on here are so polar opposite. It was much the same when he played for us.

One of the first things the new manager should do is to replace him from our starting XI. That's not a slight on Barry, it's simply the fact that we'll suffer massively from a 35 year old starting in central midfield week in, week out.

And don't get me wrong- I thought he was one of our best players last year, but that was more in spite of how poor we were overall and how well he played.

give him one more year to ease besic into a starting role in the squad

besic looks his natural replacement to me - reads the game well, excellent passing range and a snidey [Poor language removed]

Very true, has played well for us but the new manager whoever that might be, will get rid of him or even put him in a coaching role, hopefully he will stay on in some form.

Basic really doesn't seem to read the game that well. Can get caught out of position, completely misinterpret the tempo of the game, and more. He's got his benefits but he's not, certainly at the moment, anywhere close to the type of player we should replace Barry with

...his lack of pace was evident at international level but he's such a good footballer he has never relied on it in the Premier. It's meant he's been able to play for many years based on ability. Top player.

Why would you get rid of him ?
He was one of the better performers last season.
Next season , if he can play every game to a consistently high level he stays in the team , if not he becomes a squad player.Surely
it depends on how he plays. Of course it will also depend on how our new manager sets up his team.

However, regardless of who that may be I doubt if a birth certificate will determine who plays.

I think that it is far more critical year for Besic. He really needs to start marking out a place for himself.

really? besic shows flashes of having a really good football brain imo, receiving the ball in DM and dinking it down for the forwards to run on to, and always seems to be in motion for the tackle before the opposing winger has received it
obviously it's one of those things that improves with age that's why I suggest keeping barry in the meantime

To stop blocking up the Witsel thread. Too slow, not good enough, massively overhyped, nearly every single one of his peers even those who were far better players have retired or taken a step down. We have zero ambition if he starts in the team this season. We will do nothing.
