Deulofeu's comments thee other week were interesting. I think the exact quote was "Gareth Barry is the player who has control at Everton".

Alongside a box-to-box midfielder of real quality Barry can still do a very competent job. More than happy to keep him in the squad for another season.

The treatment Leon Osman got in comparison to the gushing that follows Gareth Barry around is embarassing. Osman was far more skilful and did far more for Everton than anything Barry has ever done. We honestly deserve the bottom half if some of you think Barry is good enough to be starting for us. No problem as a utility cover player but he should be nowhere near the 11 especially when it looks as though Besic Cleverley and Gibson may all be out of the 11 before we even consider Davies and also assuming McCarthy goes.

He is so slow that he retreats almost to the centrebacks in games when he is terrified his lack of pace will be exposed. So average teams with a bit of pace in their midfield have huge gaps in the middle of the park to play in. He makes countless errors resulting in opposition chances that people wilfully ignore, the same people hysterically screaming at Barkley if he has a shot at goal. When he gets a stupid red, or multiple suspensions every season it's casually shrugged off whereas Fellaini or Mirallas got blasted for it. When he gets beaten in the air with ease at set pieces nothing is said, when it's Ross he's hung out to dry. McCarthy plays a sideways pass the crowd is booing, Barfy does the same they are clapping.

The problem is that such a large portion of fans have been fed the plucky little Everton line for so long that when a player that the media rated, that they said was too good for little old Everton, that came from the champions, now believe that he is infallible and cling to the idea of him as this player of supreme class. He was good, not great, ten years ago, he's certainly not of the level required for the top 4 now. Keep him around the squad for sentimental reasons if you have to but he shouldn't be hear the first team if we want to be a serious football club.

Gareth Barry has been a great pro for us and I dont think his time is up by any means. I would much rather see McCarthy moved on than Gaz Baz. People slate Barry because he does have the turning circle of a tanker and he doesnt have the legs to get back if someone goes past him. What a lot of people dont see is how positionally perfect he is. Barry covered the most ground in our team last year, something that you wouldn't notice because you dont see him launching into tackles from 20 yards away. He is perpetual motion. He is obviously a top professional who's influence cant be underestimated. The Reading game last year summed him up to me. We were getting beaten and looked pretty clueless before he came on. He immediately made us more solid and got us on the front foot. Time is obviously catching up with him but he (like Teddy Sheringham) has never had pace to lose in the first place so there is no reason he cant carry on for a while yet. I personally would like to see less of him this season but that is down to the tactics I would like to see us play with rather than his inability to do a job for us. Gaz Baz for away games and when we need to be more defensively assured. Barkley next to Witsel for the other games to help give us an extra edge when teams inevitably come and park the bus. Also there should definitely be a coaching role for GB when he does finally decide to call time on a fantastic career.

Unlike most, I actually don't have an issue with Osman and thought he was fine as a Super Sub, but anyone who honestly thinks he's a better player than Gareth Barry has quite simply lost the plot

I can understand some of what you have said - I dont agree with lots of the abuse that Leon got for a lot of his career but think that your view of Barry has been blinkered by defending Ossie. I rate Besic and if he gets himself fit for a sustained period then I would have no problem with Besic taking his place. Cleverley I don't think there is a place for. Gibson would be great if we had any european football this year as think his game is suited to being able to play with no pressure but I wouldnt want him replacing Barry, even with his better passing range. Martinez has hung Barry out to dry over the past two seasons by playing him every game. Barry cant play every game but for someone with a bit of technical nous like Koeman I can well see Barry still playing 25 league games next season by playing the away games and against the more attacking teams at home. I also think you will see BArry come on at the end of games to help close games out, something we were criminally inept at doing last season.

Come off it there, him going to center back every game was a tactical decision used so we played more like the 3 at the back with pushed wingbacks that Roberto liked to play at Wigan, and we saw it with every CM. Gibson in the Norwich and United games in the cup, even Barkley in the QPR game where he played further back dropped to centreback to collect the ball.

I only remember him getting one stupid red card in the league game against Chelsea where Willian scored late on. His other two reds didn't really matter as they were so late in the game and the result was near decided, plus unlike Fellaini or Mirallas he got booked for snide breaking up play fouls, not swinging elbows and diving in to awful challenges because he wasn't getting played enough (still love kev though).

I can agree with you he's not top 4 material because if he was he wouldn't be at Everton. We signed him at a point where we didn't have the Mosh's bank account backing us up but no way was that a bad signing. Its similar to Koeman in that we have a player who has won trophies in a professional squad, broken records, knows a bit more than your average player in more senses than one.
