Baines rejects a new contract

Can they hold out though is the compelling question? This sure sounds like a similar move like the Nugent plan except I really think Davey didn't need him at the time.

At the beginning of the summer the two players that Davey always went out of his way to talk about were Baines and Smith.

we are, but wigan are valuing him at 6. That is why I am saying their price being banded around is too much mate.

But in the end will he opt for us because he is a boyhood blue at heart or will the club take Wigan's 6 and say tough luck Mr Human Capital, you go where 'we' say? Already turned down one 6mil bid...

Something about this story was mentioned on Sky sports news a few minutes ago, couldn't make out what was said, dont know if this helps any.

So far this summer David Moyes has complained that too much money is chasing too few players and was unprepared, for example, to spend £6m on David Nugent. Moyes has built a good defence and if Jagielka is played in the centre (he can also be deployed in midfield) he will probably partner the impressive Joleon Lescott. This probably leaves Neville, Hibbert and Yobo competing for the full-back spots and Stubbs and Valente in reserve. This suggests stiff competition for Baines if he plumped for Goodison Park - but he does have devastating power from free-kicks, somewhat reminiscent of Stuart Pearce, and would offer a blunderbus alternative to Arteta's sniper rifle.

David Moyes has shown that he can take Everton into the top six on a budget - but given the extra money available if he wants to threaten the top four he needs to spend more. Baines may not seem like good value at £6m - but that is against a non-existent baseline. Everton won't want to go over £4m - but it might be time for Moyes to simply pay the money and improve his team.

Thought this kind of summed things up. Decent read from Square footie.

Seen that. I stopped reading at the bit it said Yobo for full back.

Lost all credibilty on that didn't they. Yobo should never see fullback again now. I still have bad thoughts on his play on the right side two years ago. That is somewhat you were saying in relation to getting Baines earlier move Lescott to the middle. Lets be honest and I love Stubbs to death but this could be his last hurrah and he even admitted it himself. Lescott is ample at left back but we need him in the middle the most.

God knows. I'm tempted to say 442 wouldn't do a 'Player Facts' without talking to him, but I'm not sure.

Wikipedia does mention that it was widely reported he was a blue but is in fact red.
