So anyway, I'd take a Kanchelskis-type player all day long.

For me, and I'm probably wrong, Mirallas is an "Andrei-lite" sort of player. He's good, very good at times, but I feel we overrate him because he plays for us. If he upped his game a bit and lost the petulance, he'd actually be the player that some think he is.

But whereas you expected magical skill when AK got the ball (90% of the time), when Mirallas gets the ball, first you have to wait and see which Mirallas has turned up - the ace one or the I-might-be-a-pain-today one. Kanchelskis is one of the very very few of our post-80's players who could have walked into the '85 side - could you say that about Kev? I don't think so.

Deulofeu is starting to remind me of a bantamweight version of Kancheskis, and I like it. It's the speed and style at which he runs forward probably.

agree there...but before that we need to make a statement signing in the goalie position. As that'll probably dry up any other funds we will probably have to rely on a promising youth-type for the playmaker role.

Who are the candidates that would cost less than 10m?

I think we could probably get someone in the 27/28 range for around £10mil - shopping on the continent.

Personally, I think someone like Matias Fernandez could fill the 'Pienaar' role very well, but we have got Cleverley also.

If we did lokk for another winger (I'm thinking if Mirallas were to leave next summer, which does seem likely, then I'd love to see us go for Redmond).

I think the lads got it all, and is extremely good at drifting in from either flank and slipping in little passes into the area. He'd be a young winger I'd look at.

Wide forwards (e.g. how Kone has been playing) I think could be really good for us: Inaki Williams, Joel Campbell - could potentially go for a loan depending on what we need in Jan...

There's a few points that are a load of rubbish in this post. First of all, couldn't handle the pressure at Dortmund? They were crap when he played for them! Tomas Rosicky was their best player for gods sake.

The assist stat does my head in, it's generally not very important whatsoever who gets the assist. When Barkley scored that boss goal at Southampton this year Coleman will get the assist, then when Coleman scored that belter at Swansea a couple of years ago McCarthy will have got the assist, both were 5 yard passes that you and I could've played. It's not generally important unless it comes to people like Baines who have brilliant deliveries and actually make difficult assists.

Pienaar made Baines a far better player, aswell as being skilful and knitting a lot of our attacks together. Probably didn't have the individual skill of an Arteta or a Barkley or a Mirallas, but he was absolutely integral to our attacking play.

They had qualified for Europe the season before he got their

I agree about stats and they can be misleading

But if he was getting 15asists and only 3 goals and having big influences in games every week then fair enough or getting double figure goals every season and only a few assists. Most top class attacking players will do one or the other

Cahill had a much bigger influence IMO and he's nowhere near as gifted as pienaar

Personally I'd say a young Berbatov type character, loads of skill and invention, can push up and act like a second striker at times to confuse the opposition. A more tricksy/technical version of Kone really.
Would mix things up more than a winger type on both wings, especially when they switch sides.

It's all about the asymmetrics these days....

Ayew isn't really a playmaker. IMO he's more of a decent Naismith - e.g. a second striker who makes good runs into the box to finish off a move. However, Ayew does have the ability to pick out a pass, but he isn't really a playmaker.

Why should a formation be symmetrical? Lets have a striker who can drift out to the left please, yes, that means Kone. Possibly a younger version? Finishing unimportant, hold up play by far the most critical characteristic.

I don't care who we get as long as they're good and have bionic hamstrings.

On a more serious note I like the idea of a more "inside forward" type striker/wide player but wouldn't say no to a Del copy on the left; some lightning quick, touchline-hugging beaut who can whip a good ball in. At the moment when we're on the counter and need to attack with pace we can only go down the right and it gets really predictable, really fast.

Yarmolenko on the right and Del on the left is the dream at the minute, personally I would be looking at getting cover for barkley, Bonaventura of Milan seems to pop up with a few goals, also linked with Saponara in that area. Cant help but feel we are still a striker short though to give Romelu a break and/or support, Berardi from Sassuolo looks good but in a weird contract situation with Juventus.

Like I said its all dreams at the moment.
