If you challenge for the ball, it’s offside. It’s the rule

Is that the wording or is it interfering with play? If Pickford randomly jumps at the other end of the pitch, is he challenging for the ball even if he has 0% chance of getting anywhere near it?

Common sense has to prevail and if Armstrong took a defender off O Brien then fair enough but they had completely different players on each other and so the fact that Armstrong was offside and didn’t touch the ball played no part in Jake beating his man to the ball and scoring
