How much did we pay for Yakubu?

11.25m plus 6m for bains an 4m for jags. total cost = 21.25m an pienaar on loan. We only brought in 4 players.

This season we need about 5,6 or 7 players brough in if we want to challange on all fronts. Do you honestly think we'll spend 10+ on more than one player?

Arshavin-14m
Moutinho-14m
Veloso-17m
Engglar-8m
Johnson-8m

so we have this sort of money to spend? I know what your saying, but we dont have the clout to challenge other clubs fact.

We need bodys in, no way were going to blow 20+m on two players!! hope so thou!!

Ok, so we only brought in 4 players - yet we finished 5th??? Better than the rest of the league who brought in plenty and spent millions.

We don't need 7 new players - we need perhaps a few more midfielders - 2 or 3, a new goalie and maybe a new striker, but it really depends on transfers going out.

Im not trying to put the club or anyone down. Our transfer policy has worked wonders in the past. We are the best of the rest. But is that good enough for you? Buying players for under 10m+ will only get you so far. Belive me we wont break top four unless we bring in some real top quality players for 12m+. As well as finding them gems still.

We just need that bit extra to get the points off the top 4. a arshavin an veloso a a couple more. That bit of magic cost a lot these days.

Russian Stars Arshavin & Pavlyuchenko Light Up Euro 2008: Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Celtic, Liverpool & Everton in Hunt

andrei-arshavin-running-190.jpg
The list of clubs interested in Russian Captain Andrei Arshavin surely increased last night following a superb display in the emphatic 2-0 Group D win over Sweden which booked their place in the quarter-finals. The impact made by the 27-year-old cannot be overestimated as his first appearance at Euro 2008 turned an average looking Russian outfit into potential contenders as they ripped apart a solid Swedish side time and time again. He was ably assisted by the highly-rated prolific Roman Pavlyuchenko who scored his 2nd goal of the tournament.
The pair are attracting interest from both the Premier League and the SPL and their chances of big money moves will have only been boosted by this showing. Arshavin will command a transfer fee of at least £12M according to reports whilst Pavlyuchenko is reportedly available for a bargain £6M which surely will rise if he continues to perform like this.

Arshavin missed the opening 2 Euro 2008 matches through suspension as Russia were thrashed 4-1 by Spain and struggled to a narrow win over the Greeks. However, his appearance has given his nation a great chance of progressing even further in the competition as his creativity and goal scoring ability was there for all his many potential suitors to see. His record of 11 goals in 35 internationals from midfield is an excellent return as is his club record of 47 League goals in 217 appearances for Zenit St Petersburg. He also played a pivotal role in the club’s Uefa Cup success to prove he can perform on both the international and European stage rather than just domestically. Once Russia bow out of the tournament expect the battle for his signature to intensify dramatically.
Pavlyuchenko may not have drawn as much attention as Arshavin but his reputation is increasing with every Euro 2008 match. The 26-year-old has a total of 67 goals in 135 League appearances for his club side Spartak Moscow. He’s also finished top scorer domestically for the past 2 seasons. He’s scored more goals than the £18M rated Brazilian Jo but would reportedly cost a 3rd of the price. The Spartak forward has now scored against both the Swedes and the Spanish at Euro 2008 and has a record of 8 goals in 20 appearances at international level which includes 2 goals in the European qualifying win over England. More performances like last night will surely increase interest in the striker and clubs would be wise to make their move sooner rather than later as his price will surely sky rocket.
So would you like to see Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko at your club? How impressed were you by the Russian pair last night? So do you think the Russians would suit the physical nature of the Premier League or would struggle? Let’s hear your views.

Like, I've said I'm not surprised. The Russkies are quality players and all want out to greener pastures. It only tool 1 game to show how class they are for everyone and their mothers to jump on board because they're on the market.

We've been sniffing (rumoured anyway) round Arshavin since we played Zenit in the Uefa, and it may come down to Moyes not getting in their quick enough (as usual) to get the player.

We need that extra class to push us to champs league. 12mill+ is going to buy that. Then we need back up in some positions where Moyes should work his magic of shrewdness.

Sorry just to stick my oar in we signed Pienaar for £2.2m in the end and i am sure we bought Howard permanently during the season thats just finished for around £3m (£5.5m + £21.25m) = £26.75. Thats a pretty big spend really.

We also signed Gosling too. So that in all is 6 players, plus 3 others on loan, so that's 9 players. :)

Agree'd mate your right. So say we have 30m to spend this summer. Moyer aint going to blow it on three players when we need more like 6 players brought in.

Ok,

Let's break it down.

GK - 1 International + 2 youngsters, one of which was outstanding last season. Don't think we need another keeper.

Left Back - Baines, Valente and Lescott. Don't think we need another left back.

Centre Backs - Yobo, Lescott, Jagielka, Irving (highly rated and now a first team squad player), also Rodwell can play here. Don't think we need another centre back.

Right Back - Hibbert, Neville, Gosling, Jagielka. Don't think we need another right back.

Left Midfield - Arteta, Pienaar - perhaps we need another left midfielder.

Centre Midfield - Cahill, Osman, Rodwell, - I think this is where we need to improve, perhaps 2 new midfielders in the centre, one for defensive midfield, and one attacking.

Right Midfield - Arteta, Pienaar - we need another right midfielder.

Strikers - We have 5 strikers, we don't need another.

So for me all we need is 4 new players. Two back up and one maybe two regulars for the central positions.

why do we need 6-7 players brought in, this is baffling me!

if we dont sell aj, then I'm happy with our forward line as it is.
ok aj had a fairly mediocre season, but if people are prepared to give arteta the benefit of the doubt with injuries why not johnson?

if we get one or two of these big money creative midfielders, I'm more than happy to see johnson attacking through balls etc

when timmys fit, and if arteta stays, and even if we only get 2/3 midfielders, thats still going to look like a top class midfield.

we have 3 top top centre backs, a cracking left back in bainsy, cover in valente/centre back juggling.

the right back berth is a bit more contentious, but pip'll do for me, with hibbert as cover.

I just dont think we need to find like £30m+ for 6-7 players.

But I think the problems always going to be wages for instance arshavins on something like 50,000 a week but i think he pays far less tax on that than he would here, so an equivalent wage would be around 70,000 a week or more to improve his terms after tax.

Keepers- We need a good back up

Defence- your probably right, were ok their at the mo.

Midfield- we need a DM that will cost 8-10m+ a quality Am (arshavin, moutinho) that will cost 15m+ also another good rw or lw no need for both.

Forward- is Aj,vaughn an big vic good enough???

A few injurys last year nearly killed us off. If the yak gets crocked were would the goals come from. The bets teams have two good player for each position.

Well this is what annoys me. And its been annoying me now for years. People complaining about numbers in our squad. Jesus H we got to 4th with a threadbare squad, we have done 5th last season with an apparant threadbare squad. I would rather have our problem than the RS constant tinkering with a squad. You know what I mean???

Besides, if we don't sign Arshavin, would it be that much of a tragedy? He's 27 after all, only got 2 or 3 years in him at the highest level, plus he's in a position that we don't really need. Cahill for me would be wasted on the bench, as would Arteta and Pienaar.
