The sampling methodology behind this particular survey is so flawed as to render its results unusable in all bar the broadest of terms ie it's probably true, as the survey concludes, that there are more RS in the city these days, but it cannot be taken seriously in respect of the actual difference in support levels.
Yes, it's 95/5 in our favour.
Our average attendance is 38000 and theirs is 44000, yet city centre hotel bookings & taxi takings quadruple when they're at home compared to when we're at home.
Their support is largely out of town/tourists (they like to use the word 'global' because it's makes them feel big time), which is why they have very few local links to the city. There is no 'Liverpool in the Community', or 'Red Chrimbo'. There's no local fan initiatives. Their owners are foreign, the marketing department & club CEO is based in London. It's why they weren't arsed about knocking down all those houses around Anfield, destroying the local community. They're basically a franchise, they could be based anywhere in the country.
There are many who will follow the winning teams because their lives are in need of enrichment - in that lot's case they've been letting the worldwide fans down for decades. The clearances of the Everton area in the 60s and 70s sent loads of Blue families out to Skem and Kirkby etc - the subsequent relative success of that lot and our trophy drought means they will be bound to have more "so-called" fans in the past few decades - though I'd practically disown my lad if he wasn't a Blue. As far as match going fans are concerned (the word is SUPPORTER) easily more local Blues than Reds as the outsiders going to Goodison are very much in the minority whereas the town is full of foreigners and out-of-towners when that lot are playing (a large number of tickets are sold by season-ticket holders and scalpers who own several seats). Over here in the Wirral villages it is massively more Blues than Reds but I would say in Birkenhead itself a large proportion of Dark Siders. So - more of them professing to be Reds but more of us are true followers.
Its all about the colour of your wheelie bin, if its Purple your a scouser
