Fair play to Carlo for giving Sig' a chance. He's not well in his one start in the league and cup games.

But yesterday shows just what we miss without Gomes - genuine steel and ball retention.

Hopefully he returns now after a game off to refocus.

Gomes wasn't setting the world on fire.

Carlo gets paid to man manage and take risks. Like most players, Gomes needs to be pushed for his place. If Carlo thought this was a fixture where Sigurdsson might add something, it made sense to roll the dice.

It didn't work out, so the real question is whether Carlo learns from the result.

He said he’d been training well and deserved to play. You do need to have a certain amount of faith in your players. Not Carlo’s fault siggurdson goes into hiding as soon as we’re slightly under the cosh.

We also need to remember Gomes hasn’t long recovered from a horrific injury and as far as I can recall, has started every league game until yesterday.

You´re probably right but does Gomes change that result today? How would he have coped being pressed the way Southampton did?

Holds on to the ball much better than any other cm.

Dropping him for Sigurdsson was a massive mistake.

Siggi was probably due a chance as Gomes hasn’t really done enough to make himself undroppable but in hindsight, yesterday wasn’t the day for it and it was a mistake.

If it had been our normal starting 11 and the only change was Siggi for Gomes would have been fine but throw in Iwobi as well and our pressing didn’t look anywhere near as cohesive. Guess there’s something to be said for trying to keep the rhythm of a winning team, players knowing their jobs, what other players are going to do, where they’ll be - seemed disrupted yesterday.
