We are where we are.

He's our third best midfielder that is currently fit.

Gbamin's hopeful return can give us other options, as we could move Allan into a more natural box-to-box role if needed.

There's other issues in our side - a lack of depth up top and a goalkeeper that bookended one of the best displays he's put in for us with two of the worst decisions/mistakes I've seen in ages, and that's including his other mistakes this season.
I don't think this is a given at the moment.

Against quick, mobile, hard pressing midfields, he can't cope unless he's absolutely bang on it. Which, to be fair, is not often. We're talking about a pretty decent sample size of games now.

We've done the injury recovery "getting up to speed" thing multiple times with him. It's time for him to deliver a bit more than he has been. Or at least just be something resembling consistent

Well, Gyfli maybe, but after all the stick he got last season...

Maybe Gylfi will come in v S'ton. Or he'll play Delph and push Allan out to a box-to-box role. I don't know.

But we've got options and everyone has to step up.

Gomes came back in because for the first three games of the season he was part of a midfield which worked very well.

None of our midfielders are as good as Liverpool's three that played yesterday.

No but I think Allan was in the ballpark, Doucoure had moments and Gomes just wasn't good. I'd like to see other combinations just to see what the other guys bring. Yes the midfield has been good on the whole this year but I'm not sure how much of that is actually down to Andre. We didn't miss him against Brighton.

...I think comparing him with Allan and Doucoure is a bit like comparing apples with pears. Allan and Doucoure have their roles, Gomes has his. I think Gomes is the quarterback who Ancelotti wants to link back to front with his passing range. Not sure who else we have who naturally plays that role, although perhaps Sigurdsson and Bernard are obvious options.

We would have been more over run in midfield if sigurdsson had started instead of gomes. Gomes is the better option against teams that can match/beat us in the middle of the park, at the moment.

Ultimately I think his role is up for grabs in the long run if we are gonna go up another level to consistently control games against the best sides.

But I felt Allan and Doucoure also struggled at times yesterday. But we still stayed in it, and gave a good account of ourselves. Especially as we tried to win it, it wasn't a backs to the wall job like it has been in recent years.

Not his best game. A few times though, he was at least trying ambitious passes when he gave it away.

Thought we we were sick of sideways passing bottlers? Another day, those passes come off, and we're singing his praises. He never went missing either.

That first half Allan was dreadful mate.

He's superb but was diving in all over the shop and on the ball he was poor.

In the second half they all stepped up - admittedly some more than others. Allan was great in the main after the break.

Yep, Gomes' passing range is better than any of our other midfielders. Allan is a good passer but Gomes's switches of play are better.

Same goes for Gomes and Bernard is more of a player to drop in between the lines - the game needs to be very specific for him to be playing in there I think.

There's also the subs to think about. You want a sub to be able to have an impact either way. If we're in the hunt for a goal then bringing Gyfli or Bernard or Iwobi on when the game is more stretched and there's a bit more space for him makes more sense than having Gomes to come on.

It's a long old season. We've started so well and a big part of that is having a settled side. Now's gonna be a test because of suspensions and injuries etc.

I don't think we have a better player in his role and his role is something that Carlo values.

I am not gonna give up on him after playing against 1 of the toughest midfields in the world (Liverpool, Atletico, Bayern).

I just hope he learned from this game and is better against pressing teams.

Wholly disagree with this Toff.

I accept it's about opinions and all that but I wouldn't say that either Henderson or Fabinho are significantly better midfielders than our 3 who played yesterday. Thiago is a class act though to be fair.

Both Gomes and Allan had injuries coming into this game having missed the last game. I'm sure Allan in particular would have had very little training sessions as he would have been giving his groin maximum rest so it would heal properly.

We were up against a team working flat out to erase the memory of their previous performance and our lads were off the pace. But I've seen better teams than ours struggle against such intensive pressing.

We had 6 injuries to key starters coming into this game and we also knew that with a Saturday lunchtime kick off there would be jet lag issues with our South American boys. Another time when we're not suffering after effects of International break and Liverpool are coming into the game off the back of a gruelling Champions League match, and you could very easily see a different game.
