2020/21 Andre Gomes

He gets himself and team-mates into bother by trying to give the ball - and the responsibility - off to others. Playing an immediate pass when it isn't on.

Started the season well but that drop off since the derby is just ludicrously bad.

Actually thought he did well enough coming off the bench against Sheff Utd and West Ham, but he just looks totally inept atm when starting games.

Huge shame.
I had a discussion with my ol' man about him and we got onto the topic of how being next to Davies and Gylfi may not help him due to his own attributes.

"There's a stark difference between a system clicking due to individual strengths which mask weaknesses, and having to rely on other people to perform."

If Gomes is reliant on other players to actually perform half-decent, we have a problem because his talent should at least be on show, which it's currently not.

I had high hopes for Gomes after his initial performances and would like to believe that this is a poor period rather than a true sign of his ability, but...

... it is worrying how poor he's been.

Think we can't underestimate the impact that injury had. He seems to have completely lost any edge and bite. He hardly ever got shoved off the ball before his injury. Even if he wasn't playing well, he could retain possession under pressure and pick a pass out.

Now, he just gets shoved around. It's like he's lost that aggression - and that's got to be mental. Physically he is still a similar build etc.

We definitely can't underestimate it and I've personally always tried to be someone who gives the benefit of the doubt; we have to be realistic and give time.

Also, there'll always be peaks and troughs with players. Nevertheless, we also have to be honest about our expectations and what we require and expect.

At the moment, we've got Gomes and Davies as two options in the midfield that are more often than not under performing, with the latter being long-term.

If we want to push on, we need players to be in the bracket of performing more often than not or at a minimum more often than they are at the moment.

I'm not one for throwing the abuse out like others on here, however that message needs to be transmitted alongside providing the likes of Gomes with support.

It's a balancing act. Right now, starting with Gomes and Davies increases the likelihood of us losing a game and in reality we had the same problem last year.

It's mad how much of a different player he is now compared to pre-Son. He seems to want that extra half second before releasing the ball. gets caught in possession half the time.

Its really sad that I think pre-Son Gomes would shine in this current set up
He had lots of awful games pre-Son. Away at Villa last season is still his worst ever display.

He was decent with Allan and Doucoure and the team performed well

But like someone mentioned, it was in part due to having players to pass to like Allan, Doucoure, Richy, Digne, and James. So he actually did his job of connecting the midfield to the attack pretty well.

Once you from those talents to Davies, Siggurdson, Bernard, Iwobi, his weaknesses are exposed. He makes far too many bad passes and pressure leads to diminishing returns.

Absolutely nothing to do with the injury. He’s been a load of toss ever since signing permanently.

The injury has become a convenient excuse for his shocking displays.
