An open letter to Ibrahima Bakayoko

I actually don't think he was necessarily as bad as people say.

Looking at wiki, he played 23 games for us, and scored 4.

For starters, pretty sure we've had strikers with a worse gpg record than that. But mainly, he came from the French league, at a time when it was fkn awful. These days, it would be understood that coming from a league of that quality takes time to adjust, and he'd be given a bit more time.

Not saying he was great, obviously, but he's definitely gotten worse in people's eyes as time has gone on.

Looks like Kones write up in a few years time.

HAHAHAHA

I remember one game, against Leicester I think (0-0 draw) i was in the lower bullens.

We had a good little spell of possesion and the ball came out - it literally just needed to be slotted in and we were 1 up. There was a post in the way, so i didnt see who had the envious job of slotting into a virtually empty Gladwys st net, but the ball spun away and finished up near the corner flag.

I turned to my mate, who had been able to see the player that took the shot and asked "Bakayoko?" His nod confirmed it.

What a legend!

hahahaha brilliant

He was reputed to be the next big thing from Africa. Loads of people I knew in France were raving about him. Might have done better coming into a settled, winning side but he was ridiculously hit or miss. A real luxury but not what we needed. Walters French accounts came up with some decent ones but not him. Saw him at Lens -Marseille a few years later and he was warming up as sub in front of us and he was full of smiles at our chant of hello hello bakayoko bakayoko hello!!!!

signed him on FM14 last night for peterborough. he only wanted 200quid and bagged a winner in my last league game to get me in Playoffs.

No, Cliff was one of our own.

But we bought Earl Barret before we ever bought Amokachi or Bakayoko.

Amokachi first mate, part of the 95 fa cup winning squad. Pretty sure Barrett was bought following season in January or the season after in January. Made his debut against Newcastle away I think and got sent off.

Edit, Barrett was actually bought in Jan 95 but was cup tied. But Amokachi was still before him as he was here before Royle came ( think it was Mike Walker who bought Amokachi )

Yip....I have just checked myself.

I would have bet Barrett was early 90s...

Remember Before a game Barrett came by me to retrieve the ball and this fella said to him "c,mon Earl I have backed you to score the first goal" and Barrett said to him with a big smile " your joking aren't you " he thought it was a big joke, mind you I did as well at the time.

I remember going the megastore in about 1998 when he'd just signed to get some merch, i was 6, so naturally knew all the players told my dad 'THERES BAKAKOKO', hahah not realising my mistake i went over and was like 'Mr Bakakoko, can i have you're autograph', and he started laughing, and was like 'Its Bakayoko', then he gave me a fiver and told me to enjoy haha... fond memories of Ibrahima!
