Onana's a difficult one in terms of the greater dynamics in play.
Dyche has a very difficult job trying get all he can out of a thin, unbalanced and under par PL quality squad.
And in trying to get everything he can out of the qualities of the squad, and in trying to raise the mindset/belief/realism of the team its probably contrary to the development of Onana.
For me Onana is best played as The CDM with two CMs either side, with a back 4 behind (451 with this squad) It's probably the best and quickest way of developing - the sense of central positioning and how to be smart and patient in support knowing when to impose and dictate.
He's no way near the dictating part. That will hopefully come to him. But he doesn't need to right now.
Ideally, for now, he's holding the central defensive space, blocking passing lines and giving the CBs their orientation,
directing opposition play away from his space without getting drawn out, and do what he's best at (within that space) breaking down play with skill and physical presence.
He'd have Jimmy and Doucs/Gomes to lay to, to get things moving (rather than trying to dictate the play himself - which should always give one or two moments a match when he sees that more attacking pass, rather than at the moment forcing a pass).
He needs to be in a position where the game come to him, where he can take those moments by the scruff of the neck rather than trying to chase that feel.
He also looks much more comfortable on the ball in that position.
Problem is it looks at the moment like this all gets lost for the greater needs of the team.
Question is, which overall is better for the team.
The same applies to
Branthwaite in that he is much better in a back 4 (and Tarks).
