Allardyce On Left Backs

I believe we are very much trying to get a TOP class left back that will serve us the next decade in the summer and he’s not available this winter.

Sessegnon or tierney. It must be. I can’t think of anything else to explain the lame explaination not to get a left back.

If that’s the case I can live with it.

Allardyce On Left Backs

Sam Allardyce has admitted the club can't find a suitable left back.

Leighton Baines remains sidelined, as he has done since November leaving Cuco Martina ploughing on down the left in an unfamiliar left-back role.

Allardyce: “We have looked at many left-backs and obviously we can’t find the right left-back that we’re looking for.

"There’s obviously a great shortage of quality players throughout the world who can play in the Premier League, I don’t have any doubts about that - so to try and find one in this window means that you would be taking a gamble.

"The ones who are available, and there aren’t that many, are mostly what other teams don’t want.

"So you have to pay a lot of money for a player somebody doesn’t want to sell - and that is a great difficulty in this window, to look for a left-sided player, a left-footed full-back, which is obviously one of the positions we are light in.

"Our balance is not very good because we don’t have anybody like that apart from Bainesy.

"But at the end of the day, when we are conceding goals like we are, you want a good steady full-back in that position.

"After all, whoever who is going to play there on Wednesday needs to handle Mahrez!

"Because of the way we are told we have to play our football today, everyone seems to think full-backs need to be more attacking-minded now rather than defensive minded.

"But if they’re a top player they need to be very good at both."

Beggars belief. smh

I think the negativity on Martina on this board and toffeeweb over the past few months is blown out of proportion. He is obviously an easy target because he came for free and was a Koeman favourite at his old club.

Firstly I'll say he makes mistakes, he'll miss a clearance or a header and it'll lead to a goal. But I think he's defensively very solid for most games and there are some games where he's good for 75 minutes, and he'll have a brain fade for 10-15 minutes. Other teams also much prefer to target Jonjoe Kenny's side rather than Martina's, because he's easier to get past. Martina has good size, isn't slow and can read the play better. He also puts in a much better effort and appears to give a s*** on the pitch as opposed to mercs like Schneiderlin who walked into the team on reputation. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say, Martina's a better signing than Sigurdsson because he was 45m cheaper and can play in the first 11. He's also just a backup/squad player, and Baines is out at the moment.

Anyway I think people should give him a chance.
I've watched him for half a season be sh1te, I think that's more than enough of a chance

To be fair, his defending is decent. Being targeted for 90 mins straight and you will make mistakes.

The problem is he seldom offer anything forward. Usually, you would want a wrong-footed full back popping up inside your winger, as another centre midfielder. Someone - usually a winger or wide forward - will have to track his movement, so it's at best a 1 on 1 on the wing, and at worst 2-1 but overloading the centre.

Martina, however, looked hesitant to cross the half-line as a left back. Opponents know that and press high on their right, sometimes bypassing our winger and isolating him up on the field waiting for support.

He has to make himself more relevant on the field when having the ball if he wanted to have a future anywhere.

Martina will go down in folklore as an everton legend, as he is the player who should guarantee that we never see a second season of this big fat mess as manager for us.

willing to give Garbutt a go back in the first team before writing him off cos he struggled in a relagation battle last season

i personally think the last thing we need is another short term option, the squad has no harmony they look like strangers

if we cant find the long term replacement for baines in january and have to look for another in the summer its another short term signing for a massive bloated squad.

Baines will be back soon and clearly the people who pick the team have seen enough in garbutt to think he deserves a chance in the first team so willing to go with them on this one and hopefully sign someone in the summer who will be there in the long term

It's Sam just telling it to us how it is.

I imagine the same people slating Sam for this statement will be the same people slating him if he went out and wasted anywhere upto £15M on a left back who either needed 6 months to a year to adapt to the English game or was just rank.

Speak to a Fulham fan and they'll tell you he struggled hugely the season before that too

Didnt he break his ankle in the august? you need to give a certain degree of leeway to someone coming back from injuries like that, i dont expect well see the best of coleman till next season for example

Sorry but this is ridiculous actually for a premier league club.

We pay someone good money to find players, that's his job.

So far. ...

No striker good enough in the summer .

No manager good enough in November

No left back good enough in January

I mean seriously? Are we meant to believe this over and over?
