After 16 games (previous seasons)

My mind goes back to the first 16 games of Moyes first full season in charge 2002/03. 29 points with only two draws in the lot. He had us solid but went for broke in that first season. [Poor language removed] Alan Shearer wonder goal in the last match of that sequence heralded a terrible December.

I was looking back at old games the other day and I completely forgot how balls out attacking Moyes was for his first couple of years before he got his feet under the table and became more pragamatic.

The home game against Arsenal in their invincible season we played the best team in europe with five strikers on the pitch at various times. Started 4-3-3 and then went 4-2-4 at 70 minutes. Utterly unthinkable that he'd do that now.

It's only these past few seasons where things have opened right up too. The big four nonsense has gon right out the window. I wouldn't be suprised if we're in a similar position come Feb/March.

I just hope the expectation doesn't kill us as it has in the past. If I'm honest I think the character of this sides a bit different than what we've had in the past.

At PNE he was very attack minded.

When he took over from Smith for that last bit of the season it was the same. I remember we got battered about 6-1 up at Newcastle and Moyes comment post match was that you may as well have a bit of a go even if you get a mauling.

I think that 17th place finish season changed him completely. He was never the same after that.

An interesting analysis. Alot of people point to that 17th place finish as one of his biggest failings.

So from here, if we can finish like we did the last 22 games in 2009-10, it'll be grand: 12 wins, 8 draws, 2 losses = 44 points.

26 pts + 44 pts = 70pts = Almost certain CL finish. Or let's fantasize a little harder and assume Man U, City and Chelsea lose tonnes of games. So basically we're definitely gonna win the league!

The longer Arsenal and Spurs are still in Europe the better our chances get of nicking 4th. Pretty much that was what happened in 04/05.

Doesn't an English club have to go so far in the Champions league for fourth place to be champions league in england otherwise germany will get it or something? Can someone tell me what the situation is with this? Some Kopite said that the other day but he's probably just a bitter tw*t and wants to make me sweat

England will have 4 CL places regardless of how the teams do this season.

lol no, we're completely safe for the four slots. Even if the English Premier League didn't happen for the rest of this year, it'd be nigh on impossible for Italy to overtake us.

At the moment england are top of the rankings. Three league get four CL places. It's probable than spain and germany will overtake us this year and we'll fall into third.

But it'll take at least three years for italy or portugal or france to do it too, though. So no need to worry.

Italy, France and Portugal have pretty much no chance of catching England at the moment, it will be a long time before England's four spots could conceivably be under threat.

can't argue with that, it's science!
