jesus christ pete.
Are you sitting in front of the fire with your pith helmet on?
Nothing he has said is wrong .
Fact of the matter in reality we will not get involved.
If we did they would say we are a colonial power trying to assert are power over them again.
We couldnt win by getting into anything other than under a the UN banner.
Sad but these countries .
Will get no help from the UK
Maybe a bit of aid nothing else.
The African countries chose there path to go on there own
and rightly so in my eyes ,
but in doing so have chosen to make there own way in the world with the likes of Russia/ China and Middle East countries tying to pick them clean.
Unless they get a working form of government, free of bribery on an industrial scale that plagues them they are doomed to a cycle of unrest , war and famine.
That's down to them not us,
Sure we could help them if they asked us to, but would it really change much ?

I'm not disputing any of what he said.
But he frames it in a way that they were stupid to ever even consider ending colonialism. It came across as a bit arrogant and entitled.
Hence teasing him about the pith helmet.

I think you were playing the man (older, voted Tory) and not the ball tbh…you appear to have interpreted my words in a completely different way to both the way they were written and meant. But it’s good that you are not disputing what I posted…..

oh I totally was.
I find this statment objectionable.
"The countries wanted independence and that’s what they now have and indeed have had for 50-60 years. A lot have made a complete mess of it, but of course we will still be blamed."
It implies that colonialism was the better option for these countries and more fool them for seeking independence.
So yea, totally playing the man because of his rose coloured glasses view of 'the Empire'.

No different from the U.K. wanting independence from the Eu. People have a choice in life. Colonialism may have been good or indeed bad for territories involved with European countries. Independence for them was their choice. The people running these countries were mostly not even alive when it happened. I have no rose coloured glasses for Empire, no more than Romans would have regarding the U.K. We should all stand on our own two feet, just like the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India etc etc. Unfortunately a few African countries who have had many years to do similar are still not there. Of course we should help, and have done so for years, but if we tried to do more we would have the usual suspects accusing us of Empire building, so we have to be somewhat circumspect. It’s a shame as most European countries would want to help but are hamstrung by the shout of ‘colonialism’…..

I'm not arguing about the ability of these countries to govern themselves.
I was simply teasing you about the one line in the post earlier where you imply that they were better off under colonial rule.
Seems I hit a nerve.

And not to harp on it too much
but you might get blamed for the state of some of these countries because not long ago, in the greater scheme of things, you went there, planted a flag in the ground, and proclaimed everything yours.
And as we saw in Ireland, after winning independence, the Brittish went out of their way to engineer bloody civil war on the Island.
Look at India and partitian, look at the way the british still controled industry, same for Africa. Look at BP or other mineral resource companies and their hungover links to colonialism.
In fact the only countries fully out from the yoke of colonialism are the countries where Britain exported it's white people to plant the land.
It's terrible whats happening in parts of Africa but no, Britain doesn't get to wash her hands of how this all came to be.

I’m sorry but I wish you would make your mind up, either you were ‘teasing’ me or you are absolving the current rulers of these various countries. Who have had 60 years and numerous rulers to do their own thing ( it only took 20-30 years to completely rebuild Europe after the absolute destruction of WW2) yet even today they are still not there. So how exactly do we support them. If we do, you blame us, if we don’t, you blame us and the rulers get a free pass. I’d be in favour of the UN putting something together and supporting them, but would it do any actual good apart from food relief, would anything change. I’m all ears if you have any positive suggestions on what should happen…….

I was just teasing you about your colonial comment but you kept picking so I gave you my opinion.
