A closer look at the table

the finger still points at the forwards though, as was once said, " ya din'ae score, ya din'ae win"

True. I'm happy with Beckford's goals return (7 in 11 league starts according to Soccerbase) but Saha failing to find the net for around a year has hurt us. Thankfully we had Cahill taking over goal-scoring duties. Coleman and maybe Baines aside, I don't think anyone else has got close to their potential in front of goal. Arteta, Fellaini, Bily and Osman should be looking for 5-10 goals in all competitions. Jags and Distin should be capable of 3-5. Vic hasn't scored in 5 starts. Rodwell has drawn a blank in 10 league starts. And Yakubu only has one goal from 7 starts.

In our good seasons we tore apart the bottom half of the table. Now its a little different as teams like wolves can do the likes of City, chelsea etc more than once or twice a season. Plus the Arsenal lite experiment didn't really work as we somehow managed to pass ourselves to death. Now we are a little more direct and creating more chances even though we aren't winning the possession battle (Wolves had 53% possession on saturday) we are winning games with our B team.

From this angle it could be a catwalk.

How many of those draws happened when WE tied the score to come from behind vs. conceding to draw. If the majority of those times were us coming back to draw, then it's not the negative number everyone makes it out to be, it could be the difference between 7th and relegation. I don't remember many times where we conceded especially late. As a matter of fact we've scored an inordinate amount of goals in the last 10 minutes of games.

But surely then we shouldn't have let in so many easy goals ? We let in soft early goals against Birmingham and Reading recently, both of which cost us, especially the latter.

I think it is who we have lost and drawn against caused much of the angst this season.
Great on our day, not enough of those days.
