So when we were finishing 5th under Moyes ahead of Spurs and City, or in his last two seasons ahead of Liverpool twice in a row why were we still referred to as best of the rest even when we were ahead of teams in the top 6? And when we were 5th under Martinez? Ahead of Spurs but best of the rest?

Don’t further propagate a big 6 construct. There is one trophy and 4 CL spots, everything else is meaningless. If we’re 7th we’re not best of the rest, the 5th place team is.

Nevertheless, the six richest teams make up the financial Big Six. And they dominate the Premier League.

We'll see in 2 matches, after we've played Burnley. That's a 6 pointer.

Burnley have won once in their last 10 matches, Leicester have won twice in their last 11 matches.

Leicester could be without Mahrez for another 2-4 matches (or more) and it's not like they've been playing well with him.

Meanwhile we have Watford, Burnley, Brighton, Stoke, Man City, Liverpool, Swansea, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Southampton, West Ham.

That's one 6 pointer against Burnley, two against the Top 6 & eight winnable matches.

I really I don't want to see us without European football next season. I hope to see Sandro/Klaassen/Lookman/Vlasic/Holgate/DCL/Kenny a lot more involved than they have been, getting to play in Cups, Europa League & 'easy' Premier League matches.

How I hope we lineup for the rest of the season & how our Cup/Europa League XI could look like.

For next season:

New LB: Martin Olsson, Van Aanholt, Ryan Bertrand.
New ST: Bas Dost, Benteke, some other target man.
New CM/DM: N'Zonzi, some other CM/DM talented with the ball.
New LW: Zaha, Mertens, some other goal scoring left winger.

If those signings are made, say Bertrand, Dost, N'Zonzi & Zaha. Then Tosun/Bolasie/Rooney/Baines should be relegated to our 2nd strongest XI (Cup/EL XI is 3rd strongest)

We have incredible depth to our squad, and we're only 4 signings away from having 3 PL caliber XI's. We're going to sell or loan out a lot of players if we don't get 7th.

You've taken Oumars lock away again, haven't you?.........................

What if 5th place (for example, Spurs) wins CL, and Arsenal wins Europa League, so now top 6 all have CL spots for next year. And also let's say no one outside of those 6 wins a cup (sorry to tell you @skybluematt, but you're not going to win -- although I admit I have no idea who you support). Does that mean that there's 3 available EL spots? Would 7th, 8th, 9th all go? Would 7th go straight to group stage?
I found this:

Second question from bottom offers some clarification. No country can have more than 5 teams in CL. I guess that 4th team will transfer to EL if CL and EL winners finish outside the top 4. Although in the second part of the answer they leave the posibillity of change.

I wonder what is the case if
1) LC and EL winners are say 5th and 6th.
2) FA Cup and LC winners are different clubs that didn't win Euro trophy and didn't finish in euro places in league (lets say 7th and 8th)?
Will 4th team in that case go to Europe at all?

lol

that is a brilliant point about Arsenal and Spurs.

I am pretty sure I read that five is the absolute maximum amount of teams from one country allowed in the CL and if that is the case, I imagine the 4th placed team would go to the EL.

(unless it was the RS in 4th place......then the rules would be changed )

By that logic even if we got in the top 4 you’d still be claiming we were best of the rest?

If I understand it right, when we finish ahead of one of the 6 moneyed teams (a pretty regular occurrence pre Pochettino Spurs) we’re best of the rest because we don’t have the same money as them?

We’re clearly the 7th richest club in the league, why the arbitrary line at 7th? Spurs are the 6th richest, why were they not best of the rest under Jol or AVB? Why were Liverpool when they were 5th regularly?

It’s a media construct that Everton fans seemingly are happy to buy into. As soon as Pochettino or Klopp goes then Liverpool and Spurs will fall back into finishing between 5th and 8th each season. Not one of you would be calling them best of the rest though.

If a 5th placed team won the Champions League the 4th placed team would miss out.

I think Leicester will just about finish 7th, we could do it, but would mean getting more than a few away wins in and points at home against the likes of City and the [Poor language removed]

You're confusing two different things - performance on the pitch and success at the bank.

Although the two are related.
