As there are no brackets, the answer is 1.

40+40=80
80x0=0
0+1=1

However, if there were brackets, the answer could be 1 or 41 or 80, depending on where the brackets were placed.

For the answer to be 1, the brackets would have to be: (40+40)x0+1
40+40=80
80x0=0
0+1=1

For the answer to be 41, the brackets would have to be: 40+(40x0)+1
40x0=0
40+0=40
40+1=41

For the answer to be 80, the brackets would have to be: 40+40x(0+1)
0+1=1
40+40=80
80x1=80

Since there are no brackets, you would divide first. However, there is no division so you then move on to multiplication. 40 x 0 is 0. To this 0 you then add the forty and the one, making 41. There is no other correct answer if you follow the laws of mathematics. I am now leaving this thread forever. Caveo, you are a bad, bad man.

Correct.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LOT? (In honour of Caps-lock day)

The is question was ratified by both Cambridge and Oxford Universities as having more than one answer. The answers are dependent on your age, education and what you had for tea. The question is deliberatley ambiguous and poorly set out as to cause confusion and civil war on GOT.
What it did in fact do was give birth to one of the most amazing masonic institutions, if you believed the answer was 81.

The question was also sent to head of Higher Mathamatics at Edge Hill University, who claimed that the answer is linked to Evertons transfer budget and could be any number between 1p and £81.

However, many people still have not moved on from spelling 8008135 on their calculators. Which in turn is more an indication of how many tits are on here.

So because the question is such a crock, the correct answer is all of them. Glad I could help! (y)
