Well the old 4-4-2 wouldnt work in the modern game.

The new 4-4-2 is like this :

6
7- 8 - 11
9 - 10​

It's variations on a theme. McCarthy would play a bit in advance of Barry but he wouldn't be a playmaker. We'd have less threat down the middle, unless the widemen came inside to fill the void, but we'd have more presence up front.

Oh and in order to play 4-4-2, you need a number 6 and a number 8 and we sadly dont have a number 8 within the squad.

We have an 8 and a surplus of 5s but I think the 10 is missing

Its a decent idea mate and 1 im all for, as I think Azz? said, Barkley could probably play as a number 8, but sadly not just yet.

Cant see roberto playing with different formations til next season after another preseason and hopefully a few more players in. I reckon the longer the season has gone on and we're doing well he doesnt want to be too drastic, especially after the little slip against fulham in the cup where he played his 3 at the back.

Personally wouldnt mind seeing us go to a proper 4-3-3, think we have the players to suit that

This....4-3-3 seems the way forward IMO. Same as arsenal play. Do we really need 2 holding CM in every game? Ok away to the big 4 maybe, but at home it seems a bit ott.

You play 1 holding CM and then you are really risking it when Baines and Coleman bomb forward.
