3-4-3 do we have players for it currently?

In theory Heitinga should play as CB because of 3 reasons - he's slowest centre back, he is the best ball playing one and he is the most comfortable stepping into midfield.

Why do people assume Martinez will play 3-4-3? He also played 4-2-3-1

We'll probs play 4-3-3 which should see Jela do a lot better at least

I think he will try to play 3-4-3, I'm not convinced its a great formation, but you can always adapt it so it is more of a 5-4-1 when we are being defensive

We don't the centre backs to play 3 at the back every week. We won't be playing 3-4-3.

It could also be that he needed to implement some sort of gimmick formation at Wigan to compete. A few on here have made mention of 4 defenders being the way to go, and I'm inclined to agree. City tried 3(5) defenders this season and it lost them the title, in my opinion. A 4-3-3 or (especially) a 4-2-3-1 would do for me.

Why would we want to play the formation that got Wigan relegated.

?

In football as in life you do well to avoid extremes, I.e being the only club in the country playing with a flat back 3.

Any manager with any brain's coming into our club would surely look at our defensive record and the way our defenders preformed last season and leave it as a back 4, just as the other 19 teams play with.

I will fume if he comes in trying to make massive changes like that! We ain't broke...we need a couple of quality players and maybe a bit of tweaking.

Like someone said, city's experiment with it took them out of the title race, the players hated it!!, and it probably lost Mancini his job!!

Hmmm, reading the exc blog, Martinez seems to suggest he chooses formation based on players available. Hope so!!

It's really just a 5 4 1 though isn't it
No, it isn't.

Probably because it was the same formation which somehow saved Wigan from relegation previous season - http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/05/16/wigan-stay-up-after-a-switch-to-3-4-3/

And what if Martinez will decide that current Everton squad suits 3-4-3 even better than in Wigan? And actually playing different system to all other teams have many positives - teams having to adjust heavily to us and not having proper time for preparation for starters. Who can be benefited more? Us playing different system and preparing weekly for 4-2-3-1/4-3-3/or rare cases of 4-4-2? Or opponents who every week prepare for similar tactics, but two times per season have to adjust to totally different system?

And this line about not changing things because 19 teams do it other way made me chuckle

I agree. If he is as good a manager as he is claimed to be by some he wont change too much.

Why change something that isnt broken? The only change i expect from Martinez is the way we play footy and we certainly have the players capable, as shown in games this season! Most recently, West Ham.
