TBH, have not read the article as I don't pay for The Economist.

There is (again) a bipartisan effort to address the border, at least the third major effort since the second Bush Administration. Each time progress is made it is killed by the hard right of the GOP. This time, at the instruction of Trump and accepted behind closed doors by Machiavellian party stalwarts like Mitch McConnell.

Exactly, and republican Senator Tillis from NC is on record calling it out.

It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt the GOP doesn't have the best interests of the country at heart.

Key difference there though is Romney is riding off into the sunset. We've seen that from republicans before - once they are done they can speak freely.

I'm not sure about Tillis though and what his plans are a couple years from now

Of course. Those voices are still important, though, in speaking to those (somehow, still) unaware of the duplicity of the GOP in the immigration debate.
