Unpopular opinion here, but I don’t mind this as a position. It’s horrifying, tone deaf and insensitive, sure, but it at least is a logical conclusion and acceptance of the consequence of the 2nd amendment.

If, as a country, America decides that allowing people to freely have guns as a constitutional right is fundamentally important to them, the consequence of that position is regular school shootings and 50,000 gun deaths a year.

The pro gun lobby need to own that position, and win that argument - that the benefits outweigh the costs.

Without wishing to derail the thread, this isn't necessarily a consequence of the second amendment - other societies have mass gun ownership and do not have mass shootings (workplace, school, malls etc) on anything like the scale that the US does now; in fact the US didn't use to have this problem on this scale within living memory.

It would be possible to have it in a much safer and much more beneficial form, but to do that one would have to change US society into something that didn't manufacture the sort of person who does this (or things like kill themselves) in such numbers.

There’s obviously a social aspect to it, of course, although I’d say part of that social aspect is down to the fetishisation of the 2nd amendment, and the constitution more generally.

There’s other societies which have guns, but the US is a massive outlier when looking at the prevalence of gun ownership.

Think I’d go out on a limb here, and say there is a correlation between a country having lots of guns, and a country seeing lots of gun related deaths.

It'd be helpful if one of you good folk post some summaries on the debate so us Brits can read it when we wake up on Wednesday morning!
Do u think it'll make much difference to anything overall?

Nationally, Harris is leading, but the key swing states are quite close and Trump is closing a few gaps there. From The Guardian.

Thanks.
If it stayed like that would she win?
I saw that guy would always predicts the winners has gone for Harris.
Do u think the debate will alter things? I'm a little worried he'll just be so confrontational and obstinate that she'll find it difficult to get her points across without dropping to his level

I'm not sure if it stayed like that she would win, but it will be (surprisingly) close nevertheless. I don't think the debate will alter much for most of the voters, as they are dug-in as pro-Trump or never-Trump, but there is a handful of undecided voters in these key swing states that might be swayed one way or another.

I think they agreed to have a mute-function on the mics, so if Trump yammers on like a befuddled clown they can mute him. I won't be watching the debates...I never do as I can't stand to listen to Trump for more than like 4 seconds.

This is the electoral college map...where 270 votes is needed to win (sorry if you already know this: electoral college votes are based on the state's population--hence why New York, Texas, California have more votes), so if you win the state, you get those votes (but see here). Toss-up states are in grey
