If Biden had announced his intention not to seek another term prior to the primaries, do you all think Harris would have been the nominee? Or someone else?

I’m assuming the VP would have a real advantage but I don’t t know much about other potential Democratic nominees

Probably, I mean there’s not an obvious candidate ahead of her and not many more who you could argue would have a better chance. They should absolutely have better prepared her for this, mind.

Vance is the dumbest VP pick since Nixon chose Spiro Agnew with a view that he was so far out that he would make Nixon seem a moderate. Chaos in the Democratic Party that year as well. (LBJ refusing to run, RFK assassinated, McCarthy’s single issue campaign in tatters. Violent riots surrounding the Convention.) Problem for Trump is he has no Vietnam so he has to manufacture issues to feed the base. No one else wants his hate, folks just want a better life.

Sarah Palin thanks you for this post

Which Dem enters as a candidate?

Can’t think of a single one of those who would likely have tried if there had been an open primary who hasn’t already endorsed Harris apart from an utter wild card like Oprah. Think most have looked at the logistical difficulties involved in trying to set up a national election campaign and win in 100 days and taken a pass.

Also saying that the Obama’s are withholding support and asking for an open contest seems like reading a bit too much into a fairly ambiguous statement.
“We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges. I believe that Joe Biden's vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August. And I expect that every single one of us are prepared to carry that message of hope and progress forward into November and beyond.”

Let us see what the next week brings - it was only 9 days since Trump was shot and that seems weeks ago!
Manchin has mentioned the possibility of a mini-primary to test the water of support for Harris out in the country. That'd also hand her the chance to be seen as not merely the outcome of a coronation.

I think legitimacy of sorts has to be sought or the GOP will exploit that.

It doesn't look great if, along with Pelosi and Schumer, the Obama's were the ones talking Biden down from the ledge one minute, then pledging support for Harris straight off the bat.

They will endorse her eventually.

I think the Democrats are trying to avoid the appearance of a set up, at all costs.
But it will look like that regardless of the bit of stage management you suggest.

Could Michelle Obama still be in play?

I think she'd flatten Trump, whereas Harris will be annihilated by him.
