Current Affairs 2024 POTUS race

The latest numbers are quite sobering. People think that somehow Biden is the only candidate who can defeat Trump, but that doesn't track. Dems are killing themselves again by not finding someone younger and more energizing. Biden is basically the "not Trump" candidate, which offers little, at least to me.

Indeed. Turnout is going to be key though. One small swing of about 1% in the rustbelt and Agent Orange is back.

Tim Scott has now joined the fray, in what is surely a "get a national profile" candidacy unless something happens to Trump.

That very conservative voting record of his seems like a problem in a general. He's not out there with the current House lunatic fringe, but as senators go it's very far right. Hutchinson was definitely right of center as the party went when he was in the House two decades ago, but not by all that much.

DeSantis to announce his run... on Twitter... with Musk!
Christ on a bike.
It's meta, alright.

From this article: https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/24/politics/ron-desantis-twitter-announcement-donald-trump/index.html

“The only thing less relatable than a niche campaign launch on Twitter, is DeSantis’ after party at the uber elite Four Seasons resort in Miami,” MAGA Inc., the Trump-aligned super PAC, said in a statement Tuesday.

That takes some considerable nerve. It's OK when Trump lives at Mar-a-Lago, but it is not OK when DeSantis rents out a ballroom at a swanky hotel using donors' nickels on the day of a campaign announcement. That latter is completely normal political behavior during a presidential campaign. Living in your own resort originally built for a cereal heiress, less so.

Can we be certain DeSantis isn’t doing it at this place?

It would be weird, seeing that's in Philly. It's also next to I-95, and the only reason to go anywhere near there off the freeway is to get a cheesesteak or roast pork. The ones at John's are excellent, but you also know you're taking your life into your own hands when you go.

Getting a Trainwreck at 30th Street or the Terminal Market is much safer.

Been to John’s a long time ago when my mate was at uni in Philly. It was great. Still got a t-shirt from there as my name is John so it felt rude not to.

I still think there is a clear path to victory in the GOP nomination for DeSantis, all he has to do is not be afraid to go after Trump in a way that hurts Trump.

If he just calls him "old" and focuses on Trump ahead of everyone else, that is enough.

If he keeps on with this woke crap though it will go badly wrong very quickly.

DeSantis seems, to me, like someone whose poll numbers will continue to decline as people get to know him better.

He's not that much more likable than Ted Cruz, which is almost always a problem in politics. Trump seems to be the exception that proves the rule.
