While Corbyn's 'links' with the IRA are a little shady, it doesn't really have much relevance in this election.

Corbyn got slated by people and the media for not being strong enough on remaining. So who's wrong?
The people slating Corbyn for his referendum showings are hypocrites. All the remain campaigns were horrendous but I actually thought Corbyn was the best of a bad lot because at least he tried to talk the positives of the EU rather then the pathetic doomsday scenarios everyone else did. Basically he was probably an out voter himself (or at least felt sympathy to the cause) so when he decided that for the good of the party he'd put aside his own feelings it was never going to be enough for his detractors. Anyone blaming Corbyn for the out vote is a fool.

...just been to cast my Metro Mayor vote.

I think it would be a good idea if all UK elections have an 'Abstain' option on the voting slip. I appreciate folk abstain by not turning up but if the number of 'abstain' votes was included in the return it would have more impact.

I think they are, by spoiling your ballot/ voting 'NONE'.

..but it doesn't get counted, or it least it doesn't send a message that the slip has been spoiled on purpose. If there's an 'abstain' or 'none' option then it carries more weight.
Spoiled ballots do get counted /recorded (I have done counts at elections) but agree that an abstain or "none of these" option would be better

Spoil your ballot papers by all mean, but abstention box is just silly. What happens if Abstentions actually win? You can't declare a winner who doesn't actually exist.

...what a message that would send. Regardless of the number of abstentions, the winning candidate would still be the person who gains the most votes.

I guess it's a protest. People who don't like any of the candidates or who want to protest against the system have the right to be heard.

If abstentions won I guess the actual person candidate who got the most votes would be elected

This is probably the most depressing election I can remember. June the 9th is going to be a dark day for the country. Glad I'll be shielded from it over here in Germany.

being old enough to remember those days Thatcher was worse IMO

I'm not so sure. Not even Thatcher had the nerve to break up the NHS, tender out state education, abolish legal aid and displace hundreds of thousands from their communities by capping benefits.

This country is going to the dogs under the Tories.

Maybe mate but I remember the decimation of industry that when gone never came back.

This is why I wonder if some form of protectionism (or at least intelligent support) for industry would not be better than the unbridled free market of Thatcherism that still lives today in it's even more unbridled and excessive form of corporate capitalism where global corporations dictate to countries rather than the other way round
