2024/25 David Moyes

It is a bit of a problem when a manager says we are desperate to sign players, and we have the money to spend. It's like a message to the other clubs/agents to double the price of anyone we're interested in.

I don't think anyone can deny that this transfer window has been disappointing and worrying so far. Three weeks til the season starts and we can barely pick a team. No wingers, no real right back, only one fit centre back, nothing new in midfield, and we've lost DCL and Doucoure. I'm not saying those two should have stayed, but both were relatively important players and their positions haven't really been upgraded have they?

doucoure = charley
dcl = barry

so we need more!

I’d say Alcaraz and Barry are upgrades to the two you mention.

They were relatively important players but limited us to what and how we could play, and we’re on far too high salaries. Happy they left us, and there is a reason why they are still without new employers.

I agree, the other positions (rw/rb/cm/cb etc) need attention quickly.

Are they failing? This is the just an impatient football fan talking.

The club was a mess, especially on the footballing side of things. Like most institutions that need to be basically starting again, it is not getting done in a few months, it is maybe not even getting done in a year. There will be mistakes made, like any recruitment/business process, you think a person/idea is a right fit but it just doesn't work out. These are just the facts of football and life.

It is far too early to condemn anybody at the club for the decisions that are being made. I would say, let us see where are at Christmas, at the earliest. More realistically though, it will be the end of the season where we can fully judge the clubs situation and where we have improved and we have not improved and/or gone backwards.

I think Moyes has a decent enough standing in the game to bring in a type of player that we probably need right now. We are not going to be getting the big ego's, we are not getting the players that are being banded around for £50m+. What we need is some steady, relatively low risk players. Players that will be Moyes type players, they get us a foothold in the league and then we can move up a player notch, etc. Moyes is not it for the long haul, he is here to steady the ship. It will be impossible for us to go from 0 to 300mph, in this short period of time. Patience is needed.
Nobody is demanding they solve all of our many issues in one window. But let's be honest here. If they can't make a significantly positive impact in their first window, that tells a tale on their competence and vision.

So, yeah, right now: they are failing. Moyes himself has intimated as much. Can they rectify this? One would hope so. Is it about us being patient? No. It's about them acting and getting stuff done.

Are you mental? We've been through enough turmoil. What if we got a new manager and he flopped and was out on his ear by xmas? We'd then be on our 3rd manager in 12 months. Fresh start eh? We need to get away from this mindset and we need a bit of stability for the first time in about 10 years.
What if we got a new manager and he could attract players?

What if we got a new manager and he succeeded?

This is how we needed to be thinking: not playing the percentages and writing off a trip to Leeds because we have half a squad.

Indeed. I said as much in another thread. But that also applied to Carlo, and he had less trouble getting in names - whether we thought they worked or not.
Obviously if you have a manager of the calibre of Ancelotti players are more tempted to sign for you regardless of your position .
Players want to play under such managers .
It just means the recruitment team have to work a bit harder to convince players there is intent to improve our standing .

I agree. In some ways, it's unfair to compare Moyes to Ancelotti. But for all of his advantages, Moyes also comes with downsides. All managers do. Right now, this is not about him - we should still be able to sign good players. This is on the Friedkins and their "football leadership team".

We live in interesting times.

Think him using the word 'desperate' is a bit over the top tbh. It's like he's going out of his way to shift the blame onto the new recruitment team early doors/'pander' to the fans.

There's still a month of the window left, so it doesn't really help anybody using that language at this point..

Far better a Moyes not in the pocket of the club than the previous iteration who was embedded.

A bit of tension is no harm.
