I'm sorry (and I'm not saying this to defend Brands' recruitment, as that's another issue) but a manager's job is to get the best out of what is available to him, regardless of how poor that crop of players are.
Carlo got it so wrong today that, if it wasn't for the fact he is a serial winner, I would be questioning his suitability for Everton - I'm not, because it's Ancelotti BTW, but am making the point of just how abject he was today.
That was truly awful. Moyes was one-dimensional and boring, Martinez a fantasist who couldn't deal with reality, Koeman a clueless fool who wanted to spend more time on a golf course than a football pitch, Allardyce (as well as being a loathsome individual) perhaps the prime architect of agrictural anti-football and Silva was unwilling to adapt and seemed to say one thing and do another. Ancelotti is different gravy, but my word, today was as bad, if not worse than any of the above.
We all were looking at that teamsheet wondering how the hell we were lining up and who was playing where.
First mistake, when we were undone against Southampton due to a lack of pace, dynamism and aggression was leaving out Gordon - but to not play him at all??
Then he stacks the middle of the park and appears to have selected an out of form Gomes (who has never offered anything as an attacking player) as our most attacking midfielder. He makes Sigurdsson captain again?? Seems to have told N'Kounkou to take up position as a wing back - then never gets the team to pass to him when in space. Then he takes N'Kounkou off when we are lacking pace in the game for Bernard, who drifts inside and squashes all our CMs even closer together - so loses our only width. In doing so, he leaves the awful Delph on the pitch and makes him take up a full back position when he is too slow and can't cross when facing up against pacy opposition players.
Then to compound matters, he brings on the slow and useless Tosun for Gomes, who (at best) might scuff a chance IF we are getting balls into the box. But what it actually meant was, we brought on hair in a can to stand around upfront.
Then (bearing in mind he could still bring on Gordon) he takes off our other full back Kenny (who although playing very poorly) was our only width for the lump Iwobi. Meaning that we had no full backs- oh and surprise, surprise Fraser romps down that side to set up their second. And don't give me that nonsense about Iwobi creating our goal. It was a terrible ball and all about Dom's instincts that we scored.
In short, if it was possible to give a manager a -10 for selection and subs, I think that is the closest our manager has ever done to earning one. Yes our squad is awful but the defeat today against a terrible team is all about the manager. We've seen bad elevens win games of football and be competitive, but that . . .
And his only good move was to drop calamity Jordan and then I saw in a report that Ancelotti said before the game that it doesn't matter how Olsen plays, Pickford will be back in for the next game.
So surprised and disappointed by Carlo today.
Today was the player's fault 100%.
If they don't want to try their best when they can go top of the table, then maybe they don't deserve to wear the shirt.
Until they are removed from the squad we will achieve nothing.
