Computer games.

Like this is silly. People aren't viewing it as a game - they're viewing it as a Kojima game. They are genuinely forcing themselves to find enjoyment where none exists, meaning where none exists.

If it wasn't by Kojima, this is clearly getting 5/10s across the board at best.

It's like if Banksy drew a stickman on a wall - people would still laud it, simply because it's Banksy.

I get it, Kojima is likeable, but a game is a game.

Have you actually played it?

Ignoring the great reviews out there or calling them corrupt without actually playing it yourself is baffling behaviour.

No, and I understand that criticism, but I've watched hours of it streaming - it's enough for me. There's nothing to suggest playing it would make any difference - the only difference would be a level of immersion from interacting by pressing buttons to keep him upright.

I acknowledge there's a minor chance that playing it makes all the difference, but it's not like a, say, Hearts of Iron, where you have to play it to get into it and it isn't 'streamer friendly'. This is a walking simulator interspersed with what feels like thousands of cut scenes and quirky product placements - it's like how you can watch a stream of Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain etc. and know exactly what it is.

EDIT: Oh, I'm not calling the reviews corrupt either - not as such. I'm saying that they've been blinded by who has made it, or possibly terrified of a backlash from fans of him. Even the positive reviews have a sense of "it's rubbish" scattered throughout them but they still end up with a 10.

It's a game though. It's inherently more interactive than a film; you really have to play it to have strong opinions on its quality. I get that you can infer a lot from playthroughs and reviews, but it just doesn't sit right with me. It's a bit like me and the GTA series -- I maintain 4 and 5 were painfully overrated and their review scores were inflated by the Rockstar label. But equally I did play them both.

Funnily enough I have a feeling I'll hate Death Stranding, but reading user opinions and reviews it seems it's about as divisive a game as you can get. So I don't think you can discount reviewers who have loved it or gamers who are loving it. That said it seems very niche and I can see why, quite validly, people would hate it. Personally I don't know which side I'll end up on which is why I won't be buying it until it's a lot cheaper!

To dismiss it as a walking simulator is also kind of odd to me, as I have often really enjoyed games tarnished with that brush -- it most definitely has negative connotations. Equally it seems to miss the point of a lot of the game -- building, working with others online and overcoming the intrinsic gameplay challenges are a lot of what it is about and many reviewers have enjoyed.

I respect that view, would agree with most games, but as I say I personally feel I've played enough to feel I can get a strong handle on how certain games are, particularly when the interactivity is so modest.

With Death Stranding, it is holding trigger buttons to stop him falling over and clunky combat, combined with one of the worst encumbrance systems I've ever seen.

I'm not dismissing it as a walking simulator - I'm just saying it is one. That's what you do over and over again, going from one cut scene to the next. You don't really work with others online - there is no multiplayer, the interaction is passive as in you can leave something for other players to use and get "Likes" for it. It's even more bare bones than the signs system in Dark Souls.

I just feel there's absolutely no way this is a 10/10 game by any measure, or even a 9, so it's startling how many reviews have give it those marks. I agree with you that I'd have to play it to be 100% sure, but there's no way I'm spending a penny on it to find out.

Fair enough. It's got about 83 on Metacritic which shows that it's not really getting tons of 10/10 reviews though. Admittedly that highlights the other issue with games reviews -- scoring. An 83 is probably equivalent to what? 7/10 for a film? That's part of the problem; for me a 10/10 is strictly something you hand out a few times a generation, but the way gamers are they see less than 8 and immediately think a game is crap, so that kind of distorts the numbering system. Which is why I like reviews on sites like Kotaku and Polygon as they have scrapped scoring.

Heard a few good things about Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, supposed to be like a semi open world travel to different planets type game with Dark Souls type combat.

You dont have to play a game to make a judgement. Gamers know what they like. I can easily tell this game would bore me.

That's fair but Tubey was taking about other people's judgements of the game, not strictly his own.

I think to have such a strong opinion that you can claim other people are wrong and being biased, blinkered etc, well then maybe you should back that up by actually playing it. Or alternatively just accepting that even if it's not for you, other people might genuinely be enjoying it for genuine reasons, and not because of blind Kojima loyalty or a lack of critical thinking in the face of overwhelming advertisement.

I say all this as someone who probably does agree with yourself and Tubey, in that I'm not sure it's for me. Just don't think it is fair to devalue or denigrate the opinions of people having a great time with the game.
