James McCarthy

I think people have forgotten just how good he was in his first season alongside Barry. Now it may be that Barry was a large contributor to how good he was, but for anyone to say he was crap in that first season is suffering from some sort of insanity? I am not at all confident that the lad will ever reach those levels again due to his fitness record, but that is hardly his fault. I really rate Gana, but JMc was very good in that first season, very good indeed.
Personally I didn’t think he was that great in his first season. He was part of a unit which often worked well, and he did his job very well, but I don’t think his individual performances were particularly brilliant. I think his performances in his second season were very similar to his first, but the unit wasn’t as good, so people thought he looked poor. That’s because he doesn’t have a lot to his game, so when his running round diving into tackles isn’t getting us anywhere, you notice how poor he is at everything else.

That said, he can certainly be useful at times, and I’d be happy to see him fully fit and firing when playing the better teams at the moment because I think we have enough attacking quality to get away with 2 ball winners in those games until we can properly upgrade.

I do like McCarthy, but I see why people think he isn't good enough. He had that 1 very good season and has only showed glimpses of that form since, largely due to injury. If I had a choice out of him or Morgan, I'd choose McCarthy each time, it's just whether or not he can get back to fitness. He'll probably play for Ireland before he plays for us again.

He's similar to Gueye in the way he needs a midfielder like Barry to play alongside him. In certain games I think he could be useful but if I had to choose between him and Gueye he doesn't make the team. I feel sorry for him as he was always 100% effort and he always wanted to play but an injury prone player is no good to us if we are ever to get amongst the top clubs. He will more than likely leave in the summer for a knockdown fee but if that frees up space in the squad for a player better suited to partnering Gueye then so be it.
