That was an absolute mess.
The manager talked continuity before hand then made 7 changes.
Fairplay though I didn't hear anyone complaining for the first 35 minutes.
Bernard linked well with Baines, Lookman showed some class, Keane, Zouma, Schneiderlin and Davies had no problem building from the back and dominating possession and we created chances. They created nothing and Redmond vs Kenny was their only half threat.
Then last 5 or 10 minutes before half time you could see the intensity dropping, complacency kicking in and the goal was no surprise.
Rather than emphasize what we did well though and have a word about focus and intensity we swapped Niasse for Dowell which changed everything.
Dowell was in a free role from what I could see, showing up on either flank to create triangles with the wide players.
When Niasse came on it's like we're 4-2-4 and none of the combinations from the 1st half worked anymore.
Thought we were really lucky to take it to penalites as we didn't carry half the threat or fluency in the 2nd half that we did in the first.
For me all of that rotation added a level of unnecessary complexity to a squad that's still learning to play together.
Then having the best of the 1st half we added more uncertainty / unfamiliarity by taking a playmaker off for a striker.
Many of these players have played single digit games together.
Even the ones that are more familiar are having to learn to partner anew in a new system with new tactical ideas.
Swapping so much today felt overly ambitious, like something you'd be able to pull off after the manager has been in place for 18 months.
Silva's system so far looks complex and intricate to me. He asks a lot of flexibility positionally from the players.
While they're all getting up to speed it makes sense to keep the personnel simple.
Find an 11 that can win a game and then try and build a bit of momentum. Maybe change 2 or 3 for a league cup game.
Unless he was just treating today's game as a learning exercise for the players without many minutes in which case it was probably a success.
To try and win the game though it felt like an overreach.
