I`ve always found that knowing where my phone is and where the exits are, is enough to keep me on edge

Wouldn't do it normally but if you're away from home then absolutely, especially if you're abroad. Go out, get some ale down you and you'll inevitably get talking to some people eventually. I always feel the shackles are off when I'm away from home, you get up too whatever you want and have to answer to know no one because you can leave it there.

I've been out in Amsterdam on my own before, went with some family members once but after they went back to their rooms for the night I went out on my own and got wasted before stumbling back and pretending as if nothing the next morning. It was absolutely great.

As a bit of a history/art nerd I've done a few weekends away to the likes of Munich/Amsterdam/Athens on my own over the years. Spend the days sightseeing then hit a few bars in the evening. People are generally friendly and happy to talk to you if you show an interest in them.

I backpacked around north India on my own many years ago after my supposed travelling companion blew all his holiday money on an extensive cocaine habit. I was nervous for the first few days but then found it was a great way to travel and meet people.

Admittedly that's a bit off topic as it wasn't much of a drinking trip but I have great memories of smoking dope on rooftops with Yank, Canuck, Israeli, Aussie and Kiwi backpackers. I often wonder how things would've been different had I been in company, I suspect I wouldn't have made as much effort to talk to others.
