Thats basically it mate. The passage he gets Baines in was very like how Peinaar and Osman played. That to me shows he has that ability, but not the consistency and frequency of doing it. Peinaar would do that that 3/4/5 times a game sometimes, not a season.

You are right as well that Peinaar was largely derided for passages of his Everton career. I think he was one of our best players of the last 20 years, but probably didn't have the numbers of the pace to really get the credit he deserved as a player more broadly. I still think Osman remains very underrated by our fans, but in our currently midfield, which has a lack of players who can hold the ball and have the guile to open teams up you can see how we miss these two. There was a spell where they played together with Arteta in midfield for a couple of months under Moyes and few teams could touch them, even the top teams.

As for Davies, much of what you have to do with a young player is see what they can potentially do and you hope as they get older they can do it more often and more consistently. This for me is why I am unsure of Kenny, who remains a solid right back but I think he lacks the pace to make it in the Premier League.

Any suggestion Davies is currently at Peinaars level is untrue and I hold my hands up for that, it's certainly not my belief and not how I intended it to come across (though I can see why it did). However can Davies get close to the level of Peinaar and Osman? For me absolutely. Can he also get close to what McCarthy gives us in terms of pressing? Absolutely. And if he does we will have a fantastic central midfield player.

What was Osman doing at 19? Not being tasked with the offensive output of our midfield that’s for sure. For me Davies just needs to improve his first touch a bit and he’d be very dangerous. Needs to have the confidence to impose himself as well as he did at U-23 level and when he comes off the bench, he seems more reserved when starting but a lack of confidence and aggression has blighted entire Everton teams since Moyes left.

He's obviously worth of being kept, but kept for what is the question? Nowhere near good enough to start games. Is it best for him to sit on the bench and play only against the poor teams? We know he won't have any impact against the better teams. I say he needs to go out on loan and toughen up and get some experience under his belt of playing week in week out for a decent Championship side.

It's a shame when Tom first came into the team he had no fear (see the City game).....we quickly kicked that out him. I bring this up because I was watching the Alex Ferguson documentary and he was talking about people commenting that he was lucky with the class of '92, which he agreed he was in a way. However, he said they scouted the best talent around and spent a lot of time to get their mentality right so when they were ready they feared nobody and believed they could beat everybody. Reminds me of Tom Davies when he first broke through, now he is shackled under negative tactics and scared to make a mistake.

The second season is notoriously difficult for young players.
Davies has probably played more games than he should and in a team that has struggled badly.

He will benefit from the experience of this season and will be a better player for it.

Exactly.

Last year's side still had a balance and a threat. Like most players this season, they've come into a weakened unbalanced side and suffered.

Top scorer and best player vs can't-do-anything-well Tom

You think Rooney is playing well in midfield do you, he can barely get out of the centre circle without blowing out of his arse and his passing to the opposition is quite remarkable. Davies can improve(he can go either way) and having better players around him and as we all agree a better manager, still could be a decent midfield player, Rooney on the other hand is declining at a exceptional rate and will never improve in midfield.

You bring up the top scorer thing regular, he could have had even more if he'd stayed as a fading striker instead of being a Lidl Pirlo, and imagine he'd not missed those pens another 3, you could have had a party, pity the rest of us can see how poor he's been but keep fighting his corner it's admirable.

.... which is exactly what you are doing with Davies, except one of them actually has an end product to defend.
