Left Back Debacle

I'm probably gonna get laughed out of here but I would switch to 3 at the back. Bring Galloway back from Sunderland and play him LCB and register Garbutt and play him LWB. When Mori and Baines get fit obviously they would come back in but at least we would have some sort of balance in the mean time. I would play a front 3 with Bolasie on the left in the hope that with him being able to use his better foot to cross without cutting inside it may at least force the opposition full backs to stay back a little. Then in the summer make signing a decent left back in OP age group of 25-28 an absolute priority.

yes you will get laughed at

bring back Galloway who doesn't get a game for a team in the relegation zone in the league below, and garbutt who apart from a few decent games for us a few years back hasn't got a game wherever he's went on loan in the leagues below

the simple answer is to just buy a new left back and sell all these crabs who aren't good enough

I agree we need to buy for both LCB and LB/LWB but right at the minute I can't see us being able to sign anyone of the quality needed in this window. So rather than have Martina play there who I believe has been hung out to dry at least try a couple of players in there natural positions. I know they have both had awful loan spells but short of trying Gibson from the u23's we really are all out of options. These 2 players did have good games for us in the past and have been equally poor out on loan,it's just I would prefer to player a poor player in his natural position than a poor player out of position. I think playing then in a 5 man defence may cover some of their shortfalls. At least we might get some crossed in for our new man playing this way.

While it would be a great signing....

It wont happen... leave that one at the door.

Here here

He's guaranteed games until the end of the season and if hes confident then he will see that as cementing a 1st team place In a premier league side at his young age as the next stepping stone...to us getting into top 4 or sold to Real Madrid.

well to be fair, I'd rather see Galloway or garbutt over martina, they have both showed for everton they are far better than martina

but I don't agree about not being able to sign a LB in this window, literally any left back in any of the top leagues in world football is better than martina

He would... but we aren't getting him... we had an opportunity 12 months ago and never then.

If we wanted him, or had any inclination he wanted to come here - we would go after him because he is an obvious fit.

or maybe its too obvious dunno.

We are not going to get a top LB in this window, Baines must be close to a return, we'll be a much better side with Baines and Coleman back.

How do you know they haven't? With all the youth players they've been getting, do you think they haven't heard of him? It seems much more likely that they made some initial overture and were told not to waste their time.

We were linked with him and his brother Steven 12 months ago.

Then he would have cost a decent amount but now were talking 30mil+ I think.

At the end of the day...its worth the money as he could be one of the best in the world if he reaches his potential and if he massively falls short he would be either decent rotation OR we sell him to someone else in the championship for breakeven in a couple of seasons the way fees keep increasing.

I just don't want us to waste any more money if it's just buying for the sake of it as it appears at this stage they've identified no targets. If someone is on the radar get them in but otherwise don't leave it to the last minute to pay over the odds for someone marginally better than we already have. When we sold Oviedo last winter someone should have been brought in then or at least identified it seems they thought we could get by with just Baines and he was already on the decline. Really poor management in my opinion. I would still move Bolasie back to the left as at least it would give opisition RB something to think about with his pace so at least the LB Martina, Garbutt or a new signing would not be constantly doubled up on. Against United he was played there and I don't think Martina was as bad in that game.
