Doing a Leeds

So, what are you suggesting exactly? Pay peanuts to nobody?
We already tried our u-23 squad and their coach...
Next few years we will have to overpay...

It's been mentioned a few times today by various posters that they're concerned about where we're heading as a club. This has been largely sparked by rumours of the £145k-£150k weekly wage that we are supposedly willing to pay Cenk Tosun.

So, are you concerned that if we're offering those sort of wages (not to mention the transfer fee) for what are unproven players that we could spiral into financial difficulty and have to rapidly sell our assets and tumble out of the Premier League?

The comparisons with Leeds are worrying, it also reminds me of Tony Fernandes coming into QPR and throwing crazy money at loads of average footballers, look where that's got them.

£45m on Sigurdsson is another example of the silly money we've thrown around, vastly overpriced even in todays inflated market.

Do you have genuine concerns?
I don't think we are paying anywhere near the wages people claim.

Apparently our wage bill has gone up after selling a load of senior players who we know to have been on big wages like Rom, Cleverly, Barry, McGeady and promoting a lot of kids.

How does that work?

Yes in relation ti some if the players we brought in and are not using and the faulure ti bring in a lukaku replacement.

But the leeds situation was different. We didnt spent big on unproven players. They had shown promise in other teams and leagues. All teams have some risk unless u r buying a world class player in the 100 mill region. We have spent big but we brought in alot of cash through sales. In so much if we had sold barkley we would be close to even. This is a point that so many people miss. We hear time and time again everton spent 150 million. But do we hear them offsetting that with how much we brought in. Never. Its 3 transfer windows. This is the 4th. To me we have not overspent looking at the incoming monies overall in those windows
We haven't overspent but we have replaced some quality with a lot of garbage.

Why?

What wages are Watford etc paying?

If we were buying top players then I can understand but we clearly aren't.

Surely if Serie A or La Liga can't pay the wages we will then go there. Most footballers are mercenaries and would also welcome the chance to put themselves in the premiership shop window.

I’m not worried about it. This is just the “prune Juice” effect of the latest TV money deals. The money coming into the club has increased, so the money going out of the club has increased. Players that were £10m are now £25m and players that were on £75k a week are now on £140K a week.

That will probably go up again in 2019 as the premier league are going to make more matches available for purchase and organisations like Facebook and Amazon are interested in bidding
The only player we had on 75k was Rom.

it is worrying, you have to wonder why would we offer this lad the lukaku contract (basically)?
Surely he's not going to be on more than £50-60k a week over there, no more than £75k a week should have been enough for him.
we need to get results to back up the cash were spending
Lukaku is a 100m pound player. That's why he could expect 140k a week. This guy is not.

From just getting poor players in? Yes, But from a financial standpoint we posted a large profit last season, we arent going bankrupt and having to sell over even 2-3 of these deals.

I haven't read anything of this thread other than the headline.
We won't do a Leeds as that whole episode served as a massive warning as to what will happen when a club gets ideas above its station.
As Evertonians I'd like to think we are able to dampen down expectations and I would expect our board and advisors to be a bit more savvy than Ridsdale.

The transfer fee’s doesnt worry me as much as the 140.000+ a week. We need to pay to get the best players, but I have to think we could get a real, tried and tested striker on those wages. Not to say Cenk isnt good enough, but its a big gamble give such big wages to a guy with the same goal rate as Kone in the turkish league.
It will show other players that we’re willing to pay too, which is a positive.

This could go both ways, I feel.

Leeds built up massive debts by spending assumed future earnings that never materialised. That's not what Moshiri is doing. So, no, we are not doing a Leeds.

He is spending with a view that it will all eventually be recouped by player sales and new stadium revenue, so actually that is exactly what he is doing.
