A few high profile names like Patrick Roberts at Celtic choosing to stay with their clubs rather than go , so more opportunities for our guys. I hope that doesn't happen. I think it will be very important for Dowell/Kenny to make a good initial impression pre season before signings emerge if they have a long term future here. It sounds dramatic but it was only Holgates performances which dampened Koemans desire to sign Martina.without that exposure on August he may not have got much game time this season at all and we would probably be writing him off. Opportunities for young players are a series of sliding door moments that need to be taken.

As for the rest it's a great achievement to have 5 playing, more than double any other side. More impressive when probably our most two talented under 21s (Holgate and Davies) have not been included.

Found the post below a bit odd given that the only two young British players currently playing for City's first team come from the youth setups of QPR and Barnsley whilst Deli Alli (Milton Keynes Dons) has just won young player of the year.

Whilst I think Everton have a good academy and a history of producing players that get into our team, different setups will suit different kids and perhaps "roughing" it at one of the lower league clubs academies might teach kids a hunger that they just don't get at one of the premier league academies?

But it doesn't work like that... a smaller club does not improve your chance at making it, you'll get first team football sooner but a much poorer football education which will stand you in better stead in the long run? I know which I'd choose anyway. You've not really explained why Oldham would be better than Manchester City... it's really not you only think it is, you have to be careful equating first team football at a much lower level sooner with a poorer footballing education is better than the best education you can get with a team of professionals that will find you a club for first team football should you not make the first team.

At the end of the day the kid from Oldham would be much less likely to make it to the level required at City that's a fact and a major flaw in your reasoning, just because a lad from our academy doesn't make the first team doesn't mean he's failed completely he'll still be at a higher level than the Oldham kid.

I think there is a lot to be said for the Ali's, Stones', and Holgate's of the world being thrown in the first team at 16 and being forced to sink or swim.

Truth be told, I've heard that most Academy players these days essentially have it TOO easy. Everton do a great job, but have we brought through any more players than Barnsley? They've produced Stones, Holgate, Harry McGuire of Hull (who is rumored to be on our radar), among many others who ply their trade in the lower leagues. It's certainly a helluva lot more than Man City have produced.

I'd imagine developing a footballer from youth to first team is not unlike education. Better education seems to benefit most the median student. Better access and opportunity helps the disadvantaged/ or low-achieving student (although the factors here are complex), but the high-achieving student seems to do well in any situation unless it produces impediments to educational development.

And it doesn't really matter if a smart, high-achieving kid goes to Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, or Texas-El Paso. Given the opportunity, their talent shines. I can't see how it would be any different for a footballer. Give every kid a chance to succeed, and build up their professional skills and character while supporting their education and they'll be better off for it. And hopefully those high-achievers, the ones who can play at the top level, will break through and do it for your first team, and not another.
 
That's me signed up and getting excited about tonight's match, big smile on my face , a well deserved trophy for Unsy and all the youngsters involved . I wonder if those out on loan Connolly , Jones etc will be in the team , they all certainly deserve to be out in the pitch when the trophy is presented as it's been a great squad effort all season.

Feller on the radio there saying that Dowell has been Player of the year at each age group since he was 9 and should be in there before Calvert Lewin is.

I agree with him.

WTF is going on if he's not getting game time?

Well this has been answered many times mate. At the start of the season he was poor , picked up in the middle and in fairness has played well in the last few months . He's got a sublime left foot that we all know about , but has rarely imposed himself like he did regularly last season. A great platform for him tonight , hope he takes it , and it will be am interesting comparison between him and the more industrious but less sublime Joe Williams who of course has made re cent first team squads.
