James McCarthy

Other than his tackle on Arnautavic barely remember seeing him.

Tbf, it took a long while for people to notice Carsley.

I like McCarthy and think he has a place in the squad, as a good option when we need to mix it in the middle. Hes a different player to what we have which allows us to change it. He harrasses and harries players though positionally he still has a bit to learn. He could get away with it while Barry was there though.

I'd 100% have McCarthy in my squad, mainly as there is not currently a better player available to bring in, but then that stands for every single player in the squad, bar none.

I'd disagree. There is better. And we already have him! Gana!

I know that, hes already here though. If we got shut of McCarthy, we'd have to replace him. We currently have 5 for 2 positions each offering something different and all can complement each other in different ways.

He got into some really good positions going forward last night, but lacked the quality to pick out the final pass.

Did alright, though.

In the past he's been able to lay off that ball when he was passed through but just missed it. He had a few assists last year in similar areas, he just missed it last night.

RK obviously likes to have options in the midfield, which makes sense given the style he wants to play. We need depth here. My feeling is if/when Besic comes back healthy he'll want to assess all his options here and sure, sell one or two off. But for those that say J Mac has no place in the squad whatsoever, well, that's just being ridiculous

Agree mate.

He'll be useful.

He definitely helped push us up the pitch more, and he made some good runs.

Will probably start on the bench on Saturday though, unless Koeman chooses to ease Gana back in rather than start him.

I appreciate the qualities he brings to the team; energy, often leading the press, breaking up play, tackling. But with Morgan sitting (expertly done), JMac often found himself on the edge of the Stoke box, and unfortunately he doesn't, and has never had, the quality to contribute anything of value in the opponents box - to the point where he actually negates our build up play and thus renders his good qualities meaningless. He was a good substitution to bring on as we were getting out battled by a midfield of Adam and Whelan in the first half, but once we gained control in the second half (which JMac can take credit for, although the match turned into a game of one bounce for a good 15 minutes), we just needed a little more quality from him. Good squad player, but primarily when we need a player of his qualities, it should be Gueye all day.

Jimmy Mac did very well when he came on last night.

Him and Schneiderlin sure took no prisoners ;)

What'd you make of Schneiderlin, Khal?

I think he was a tad sluggish at first, but once we got on the ball he started to run things. Exactly what we needed, IMO. Some of his passes were very neat, but also incisive... Something we've lacked from deep for too long.

Agreed - I also think the switch to four at back was primarily why it prospered his game. It allowed the CBs to split and Morgan to drop in and have more outlets to pick out.

Pretty much that, Toff.

The lad is bound to be ring rusty and I thought it was a pretty impressive debut on account of that.

I think he will work well with both McCarthy and Gana and the three will be permed in those two DM positions to ensure a high octane engine is relentless every game.

I am very happy with things at the moment and even if I do appear to be almost a lone voice on here, I thought we played well last night and that it was a cracking match :)

And I am loving Lookman ;)

Think we were poor for large parts tbh but it's nothing I didn't expect.

We weren't awful, just a bit off the pace. When we did up the anti, I think we looked a real threat and could easily have won it with that Davies chance at the end.

And aye, he looks a player!
