Clapping Naismith

Surely the applause was a demonstration of the respect in which Naismith is held possibly more so as a person than a player?

To my knowledge he's been the perfect professional, but his off-field activities speak for themselves. On a wider note what's wrong with a bit of sportsmanship anyway?

I think WBA cheered Rom when he scored for us against them.

Admit it if the Straq scored for against us we'd give him a standing ovation.

Reading this thread, trying hard to understand why there is fume over a simple bit of sportsmanship that happened in a sport. Then this post got me wondering... What would happen if hibbo scored against us? Would there be a riot?

I would certainly say applauded if he's subbed off.

Not sure about doing it after he scored, but I've no problem with showing some form of appreciation.

Were people clapping Naismith's goal or his respect after? Two very different things to applaud.

Id say Naismith's for respect and the other goal deserved a polite clap as it was a brilliant finish.

As for Naismith, well, he still helps the homeless out in Liverpool. He's a top fella, and clearly loves the blues! I wouldn't make a regular habit of clapping ex blues, but good on him.

This wouldn't have been an issue if we'd have ended up winning.

Some fans just love to moan.

Vividly remember my first game at Goodison as an 8 year old

Leyton Orient at home in the Rumbelows Cup in 1989

Their winger, a lad called Danny Carter, smashed one in the top corner from about 30-35 yards out past Big Nev. Everyone around us in the family enclosure clapped (the game ended 2-2, we went through on aggregate).

I've seen quality goals scored against us appreciated at Goodison with a clap, but last night felt wrong. He got appreciated before kick off and rightly so, but it should of ended there.

Oddly enough I wrote about just such a phenomenon the other day.

Ipswich were 3-0 up against us in 1980 when Mariner scored a great goal.

There was the customary split second stunned silence when the goal went in.....only for practically the whole crowd to stand up and applaud.

He still mentions it sometimes when he is being interviewed about the old days.

But re last night.....I wasn't there but I would imagine the applause might have been for Naisy not celebrating his goal rather than the actual scoring if it.

Mutual respect from a limited player but very classy guy and the crowd whom always appreciated he gave 100%.

And BTW whom was insulted by this club when he was sold to make room for Niasse

I am pretty sure we would have made a better showing in the latter months of last season if Naisy had stayed and the albatross round our neck for the next few years has been left in Russia.

I'm not arsed either way. People can do what they want when it comes to showing respect to former players. I'd be more concerned that we were completely drowned for the whole game by a minibus of Norwich fans. The atmosphere was crap - again - with people sitting in silence except to jeer any mistake by our players, mainly Deulofeu and Barkley. It was one of those nights when you can hear every moan from the stands. I know we were poor on the pitch but it must be horrible to play in front of such a negative crowd like last night

Don't see the problem with respectful clapping for an ex-player who showed respect for us by not celebrating. Even so as others have mentioned I don't think it would have been the case if it had been an 88th minute winner.

I can widen this argument and make this topic pale into insignificance by saying sometimes I want to clap when brilliant goals are scored against us, I don't, I just doff my cap to them. At the end of the day I love football and although I hate Everton losing or goals being scored against us, I can recognise and support brilliance* whether it comes from us or not. (*Except when it's the RS every goal they score is just a poke in the eye with a sharp stick)

Too bad we all have gone down the route of deep set tribalism that blinkers civilised good grace and manners.

As a non Evertonian I thought it was class and wasn't surprised to see it. That said I'm not sure what I would feel had (say) Bolasie scored at Selhurst. I think it unlikely there would be much clapping.
Unusual but good to see and if anyone would do it, it would be Everton.
