Clapping Naismith

Anybody else think it was just wrong?

I thought it was very strange and I wouldn't like it to happen again if an ex-player scores against us, clap them on, clap them off by all means, but when they score, sorry, it's wrong.

Slightly embarrassed me if I'm honest.
Couldnt agree more.

Before & after yes...during a game no way.

He's ok Nais ,but while its game on he's the same as any other opponent.

I've been to quite a few of our games over the years when we've clapped when the opposition has scored a really good goal and have no problem with clapping Naismith after he scored. If people want to fume pointlessly about it on the internet then I have no problem with that either.
No fuming, just didn't like it and I've not witnessed it before, ok a sympathy clap when we are winning easily and a favorite ex-player scores I can understand that, but he knocked us out the cup.

When I went to away games with ball harvey , and Kendal, and we were winning with ease even on the KOP home fans never clapped them as they had not scored , but did pass comment on how good they really were, nothing wrong in complimenting a team - I can remember Spurs coming to Goodison with an aging Greaves , and Gilzean - Greaves then platyed in a central midfield role just behind Alan Gilzean they tore us apart that day all the fans around me were commenting how great they had been , and how we could just not cope with them nothing wrong complementing good play they clapped them though!
An ex player if I was there today and never celebrated his goal v us yes I would clap him for that!

It's fine. I do it all the time. When Rooney first scored against us I clapped him and also gave him the Black Panther salute.

When Barmby scored in the Derby against us I sent him a bunch of carnations from Interflora, although he wasn't in and the delivery guy left them next door but forgot to leave a note and Barmby never ended up collecting them. Still, when I saw the Interflora delivery guy again, when I was arranging to send a balloon, teddy bear and 7 roses to Tomas Radzinsky, I gave him a big clap for his effort.

... but he knocked us out the cup.

Strictly speaking, in terms of goals scored, that's true, but the fact that about half our team didn't really turn up was the real reason we got knocked out. We had plenty of time to turn the game round after he scored, but we didn't.

As much as anything, clapping him last night was an acknowledgement of the fact that he didn't celebrate his goal.

He wouldn't have celebrated anyway, he's a good egg, but even more so when as soon as he scores he hears us clapping him.
