Joel Robles

What, like Stoke who put 4 past us at Goodison and Bournmouth who scored 3 last time we played them. If he only stops the gash teams scoring against us that's an improvement.
I was just raising a point that a few people have mentioned, and to be fair it's not unjust to consider who he has faced when thinking objectively.

Nevertheless, that's not a criticism of Joel at all as I'm a fan and he's been a huge improvement on Tim: his current record speaks for itself!

When you consider how many goals we were conceding against poor teams, we've certainly been much more assured with him between the sticks.

I'm just not yet entirely convinced he's capable to be our long-term shot stopper, although I've definitely seen evidence of him being able to.

Hopefully he shows his recent prowess against the big-teams as I'd be more than happy to have him as our number one. Forza Joel!

Yep, he's earned his chance to make the place his own.

However, we still need to bring in a top drawer keeper in the summer and create some genuine competition for the keepers position. Having 2 keepers who were fighting it out for the shirt would stop the complacency that saw Howard apparently undroppable for much of his time at Goodison - under the current and the previous manger.

I wasn't aiming my post at you mate. It was just that you suggested that people might question the level of oppositon. If the opposition are so poor, surely the question has to be asked of our defence with Howard between the sticks (and Stones). Why we conceded 7 goals to Stoke and Bournmouth. Of course, it doesn't prove he's the long term solution. However the defence definitely looks more assured.

Max respect to the big man, his confidence has shot up, he had that look about him like he wanted to save the penalty before it was struck, and he made himself big and waited for his moment.

A game changing save, and otherwise very self-assured. MOTM yesterday for me.

Other than the spot kick and the low save from the cross he didn't have all that much to do,I agree his greater mobility is a plus, but the attempted punch were he was beaten to the ball late on shows it's early days still.

I know he missed the punch but his presence was more than enough to put the striker off for fear of being clattered. When I seen the incident I immediately thought that with Howard he more than likely would have stayed on his line effectively giving the striker more poise to pick his spot. Yes he missed the cross but still prevented a likely goal IMO.

2 things Howard wouldve mucked up.
Maybe, maybe not it's something we'll never know 100%.But until he's played in a game with lots of shots on target and difficult crosses to deal with, maybe we should stay cautiously optimistic. And if we are going to win the Cup that day will come.

We do know because starjumps has messed up dozens of them crosses over the last 18 months

Saw a replay of the penalty on MOTD last night, they paused it right before the penalty was hit and Joel was still on his feet, then paused it again right before the Bournemouth players hit the rebound and he'd got back on his feet and was ready to make the second save. Thought that was quality.

Yeah I noticed that too.

Our defensive unit seem much more settled with Joel between the sticks

This is becoming much more the norm these days and something that ideally we should be looking for. Offers competition and reassurances.

Arsenal have Cech and Ospina, City have Hart and Caballero, Lloris and Vorm at Spurs, Bayern with their options and Barcelona as well.

It just comes down to whether Martinez sees Joel as the primary choice or not, as that could be the difference between spending £5m or £15m.

What concerns me though, is that we've had genuine competition with Robles but for long periods looked reluctant to consider him as an option.

The situation may be different with Robles, as he's not as entrenched at the club as Howard was, yet will he not become Martinez's stalwart?

Will he gain the automatic position? I believe competition is important like yourself; I'm just sounding some thoughts which I've had.

If Timmy had played yesterday we would be out of the cup end off!
