Joel Robles

......I think he had his angle wrong for their goal and left a nice big space for the lad to roll it in. He did this once last season, apparently losing his whereabouts and an open goal for the attacker.

Those as old as me will remember how Gordon West would scrape marks on the corner of the 6 yard box to get his angles right. It was only half a yard but last night Robles made it easy for Navas.

He also made a blinding save from De Bruyne that would have left Howard grasping at air and watching the net ripple.

Goalkeepers, more than anyone, need to play. They need to be started consistently. They get confidence and a feel for the game which can only be obtained by playing. If he can do this well with his first appearance in months, he'd be doing twice as well with a run of games.

....I don't disagree, a lack of game might be why he got his angles wrong. I think he deserves to be given a run.

So was I - I was dreading bad errors with nerves - mlyons and DitheringDoug on here giving me stick post after post etc , but I kept my faith like my avatar the stick he got replacing the Golden Vision in the ground of many fans and as a ten year old I told them straight with my big brother give him a chance!
That's my argument he needs game time if he works out poor then we know for sure!
I'm not so sure he's going appear as poor though.

Aside from one goal against Krasnodar, he's done well as far as I recall.

He definitely got his angles badly wrong and you're right he did so in a game last year. He needs to play until rest of season then we can take a view on whether he's going to be good enough in the long term. One things for sure the defence looked a lot more settled than when Howard's in goal.

His best performance for me was against Palace last year, which was the last of the run of games he had whilst Howard was out. There are always nervy moments with him but he came for everything that day - anything that came anywhere near the six yard box he was trying to claim.

He's by no means the finished article but for me he's a better bet than Howard is right now, and - crucially - he's got the potential to actually improve. Like him or loathe him Howard isn't going to be a better goalkeeper this time next year. Robles might be though, so I think it's worth taking the gamble to see if he can step up.

Could be that the team as a whole were up for an important game and were concentrating better, but that said, I agree with you. He commands his box far more consistently than Howard, this must have an effect on the players directly in front of him.

For a big part of this season we were putting out teams that included youngsters such as Galloway, Stones, Browning, Deulofeu , Barkley , Funes Mori and even Lukaku. James McCarthy although an experienced premiership player is still a youngster and may not be a leader just yet.

I think the manager may have felt that to add another rookie in Robles would be just too much.
Howard is obviously a leader off the field and as fans we do not see all that he brings to the table.
I think that may be part of the managers problem. I think also that if we saw a defence with Baines, Jakielka, Coleman and Stones/Mori fronted by Barry/McCarthy/Besic then we may have a far better chance of seeing Robles behind them.

Ultimately playing Robles is a gamble, but then so is Howard. He's at least as likely, if not more, to cock something up.

The difference is that Robles is a DECADE younger. Put faith into young players as mistakes can be learned from. But you can't teach an old (and ludicrously arrogant) dog new tricks....
That reflex save dive in the 2nd half was great positioning - tim would have gone down to it like a falling tree!
