Roberto Martinez discussion

I take it you was a regular through the moyes era? It was boring football the majority of the time were we couldnt string 3 passes together.

Yes we have problems now, yes he is doing my head in with the howard situation, and we were unlucky that we have had to put two novice (for different reasons) centre halfs together. But think we are closer now than we ever was under moyes of being a top side.
Is it really unlucky though? I mean, it's not exactly unlikely that a 33 year old muck and nettles centre half who throws himself all over the place might pick up the odd injury is it? And yet the manager knowingly went in to the season without experienced back up. That was his choice, I thought it was a bad one at the time and I still do.

It's scandalous that our best team in 20 odd years is languishing in mid table, in the most open premier league season yet. When teams like Tottenham are capitalising, with a squad id argue is very close, if not slightly poorer than ours. feel Bobby has to go.

.....defending isn't only about the back 4 or what we do when the opposition has set pieces, it's about what the totality of the team do when the opposition has the ball. I think this is the major problem, when McCarthy isn't available we have too many players caught in the top third when the opposition break. It leaves the back 4 totally exposed.
I said in a previous post that the midfield is so easy to cut through,5players but only two will put a tackle in chase or harry the opposition, rather than a number 10"play maker" I'd rather go out and by a tough central player

On the whole I agree with @davek and i'm behind Martinez.

My main frustration - and it's the one that is now beginning to test the fan's patience on a whole I believe - is his stubborness and refusal to change things that obviously aren't working.

Our attacking play this season has been outstanding - and to be honest it's got to the point where that side of the game is down to the players.

IMO, this is how it should be. The manager should be responsible for the overall tactics and tweaks and changes throughout the game/training, obviously. Then, his priority should be defensive shape. The attacking play sorts it self out - as it is mostly down to improvisation and skill - something our players have in abundance.

Martinez is making himself look a fool at the minute, with his steadfast refusal to adapt his style of management to focus on our defence. Howard has to be dropped, but we all know that he won't be. Jags coming back hopefully adds more solidity, but that is no guarantee.

Give him until the end of the season to turn this around and fingers crossed this season, one way or another, won't be a waste. I'm still behind him, but yesterday is the first time the small doubts have become major for me.

Watford, Spurs, Palace, Stoke and West Ham don't play hoof ball and I would rather be those sides right now.

I've been on and off with Martinez since he came but it's obvious he's not going to improve defensively as it's not his strength, likewise Moyes and Pulis are not gonna suddenly become all out attack minded managers. If your happy with the defensive set up then stick with Roberto but if your not don't expect it to change anytime soon.

If we win the League Cup then 8th place in the league will be enough to class it as a good season I think.

8th on it's own will feel very average.
If we win the league cup all he has to do is keep us up this season. Won't happen though, unless their is a humongous turn around. The last time we beat a team who were situated in the top half of the table on the day we played them was Manchester UTD 3-0 and to win the league cup we are gonna have to do it at least twice in the next 8 weeks, unless we win the semi and final on pens....which to be honest would do:D;)

Interesting, in how bigger section? I don't go under this clown, fair play to you for doing so. I was told yesterday that no more than 200 fans wanted rid of Martinez, are you saying that's inaccurate?

Did you stop going when he became manager or has it been recent?

Spurs have a better squad than ours

RE that top paragraph I wouldn't as we have better players then all of them. Just a worst manager, easily fixed for a board with ambition and a fan base with expectation.

I wasn't regular towards the end, no. I'm not calling for Moyes back or Moyes type football, that's just a cheap cowardly shot that people use to convince themselves that anyone who doesn't want Martinez must want Moyes. It's nonsense, most of the time not even worthy of response. My knowledge of potential new managers (not that is ever going to happen) isn't good enough to do much suggesting, but this squad shouldn't of averaged 11th place over the past 18 months. Nothing will convince me of that.

We have alot of young players in the squad and a new defensive partnership. I agree with you that on paper we should be doing better but football isnt played on paper and young footballers wil make mistakes. Martinez has the challenge to find the right blend but in my opinion i would rather be trying to tweak this style than previous styles. Can he do it? I don't know but we should give him longer than two and a half seasons.

TBH went to a few games 13/14 when we played winning football, last season ended me with him. But like many I'm fickle if we turn a massive corner or even perform what looks like a U-turn I'll be happy, not happening though as things stand.

I totally agree, he has made mistakes
